I've decided to not be a RAHC (Raak). As we have trolls, spiders and bots we may as well admit that we have Rahcs. Remove All Human Contact.

In the late 19th/early 20th century someone once said "the telephone is a means of communication not conversation". One made a time to meet and then things were discussed, conversations took place.

To meet, to get together with friends is impractical for me because, whilst beautiful, Portgordon is in entirely the wrong place. I need to live somewhere else, not impossible.

Here's my new life/work strategy.

Don't be a RAHC.

I'm using technology to open my world. Most people in their business and private lives are being used by social media to the extent that their worlds are being slowly shut down. The door bell needs to chime, the phone needs to ring and only then does the email need to ping.

Real world stuff - Today a card arrived by proper Postman Pat. Rosie's having an 80th birthday party and I'm invited. Saturday 1st August RSVP. She lives about 20 miles away and I am SO there!

"Philip, anyone you'd like to bring with you?"

"Well, yes but ...oh RAHC !"

Simply brilliant.

Along with technology negatively affecting our communications, the trend toward home studios has made the lives of many VOs even more isolated.

I can't stand that I live so far away from most of my friends; something I'm presently unable to do anything about, but I'd change that in a heartbeat.

Thank you for the wake-up, Philip.

I have a couple friends that I communicate with almost exclusively across skype. I also have a small voiceover group that meets every couple of weeks for an hour or so sort of informally. We discuss things that we've learned and get to brag a little about victories. We also try to speak about non voice over related stuff.

I refuse to become a recluse. I think most vo people are actually fairly gregarious which is why they gravitate to the trade. Then they shove themselves in a quiet room and jibber jabber all day to themselves. The nature of the trade and its people are pretty dichotomous with today's tech.

I'm making a concerted effort to find ways to be truly social. As much as I'm annoyed by a high percentage of the population, I'd have serious issues without having people around once in a while.

There's a group of us who meet up pretty regularly in NYC. Yes, even in NY we're isolated in our own studios. So we look for any excuse to get out. But at least we have a bunch of us in close proximity.

You have to come to NYC, Philip. Stay a while.

Our Buffalo meet-up group, born of a group Doug started many moons ago in FLA and urged on further with due Faffyness, has allow us locals to talk shop with such regularity and benefit that we are considering proudly opening each meeting by having each member say "Hi, I'm (name here) and I'm a voice-over talent.

Point is it helps each of us mentally physically, spiritually emotionally and most of all professionally.

Plus there's eating and drinking.

There's a Portgordon meetup group, but it generally consists of one voiceoverist and two dogs.

There is a serious case or RAHC over here. Making headway, slowly, as I rediscover my ever changing role in the lives of the people who live with me.

I think a New England hootenanny is in order soon. I'm also looking for the best way to get down to NYC later this year.

Me too! Or a Portgordon hootananny.

In other news

"Ooohh, of course! You don't know because you're not on Facetube!" said a friend (well someone I've met at least once, nearly)

"I don't know because no one told me" I replied. I'm the first to admit that until Facetube no one told anybody anything we just sort of stumbled over information.

I have a home with an unlocked door or for shy people there is a door bell, two telephones (an earth one and a cell one), ISDN lines (don't REALLY count), Skype (with mic and cam) AND an earth bound mail box not to mention an email box.

"Ooooooooh! Of course. You don't know because you're not on Facetube!"

My polite reply stands but I admit to thinking AWWWW PHUQUE* OFF!

*As I don't swear I spell politely.

RHC last night. Real Human Contact

Needed cash so after watching a film on TV I drove to Buckie to use the cash machine in the square. It was late and I noticed a girl/young woman propping up the bank, chin on chest.

"Is yon quiney ahricht?" a taxi driver asked me "she's bin stonning there an awfee lang time".

I checked. She was gorgeous, flaming red hair, foul-mouthed, very drunk and really upset. She'd been dumped. My suggestion of a taxi home was dismissed because she was broke until pay day. Taxi to Fochabers at that time of night £15. Not appropriate for me to give her lift home.

"Give taxi driver your address and he'll give you a lift home!"

Lisa, for t'was her name, found the good manners to vomit before she boarded the taxi. I gave the driver £20 so that all was right in the world.

"I'll pays yer back" slurred Lisa.

"No need"

"Kin I git yer mobile nummer?" asked Stewart the taxi driver.

Did the biz. Home for me, late Collie walk and so to bed.

1530BST. Police van pulls up outside my house and a uniformed Inspector knocks.

"Mr Banks? Philip?" he asks.

"Yes, come in"

I was handed a bag containing a bottle of single malt whisky, he then reached into his pocket and handed me £20.

"Lisa's Dad?"

"Aye. Thank you VERY much!"

"She ok?"

"No and serve her right! Got the mother of all hangovers. 24, kens a'thing (knows everything) but not a dram of common sense! Thanks again, really"

That was that.

The only downside was that because I'm not on Facetube you can't watch the video of a hot girl vomitting. Shame, it was spectacular! You'll have to wait for it to come out on DVD or Netflix.
