Okay, I've changed my tune over the years. When I was in my 30s, 40s and 50s,(Okay, showing my age here) I'd say go for everything and get the cash. But now, I'm kind of mellow and ethics seem to be something that has swelled up recently and I have not done certain voice over projects that don't FIT into what I want my voice to be attached too. The funny thing is I'm making more by doing this approach with my intuition and gut feelings instead of ego. How about you? |

Not counting auditions that I refused to do, there are at least 3 jobs that come to mind that I was asked to record that I declined, because they did not FIT with my core values.
The bank account might be about a thousand dollars poorer, but my sleep is that much sweeter _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

I regularly say or type the following
"Thank you for thinking of me I really appreciate it but I simply do not have the availability"
The above covers pretty much everything from $4 for an audio book to traffic humans for fun and profit. |

Yep, it is absolutely important to follow your values. I had a project with a very large potentially repeat client who does a TON of high profile stuff. They asked my rate, they accepted, they sent the script and I had to decline. That ended our potential relationship.
One other lesson I learned with that one was NEVER say yes or give a rate quote without seeing the script for new clients. |

Yep. No stuff that goes against that which is writ 'pon my heart.
I was the voice for some southern state politics a few years back. Candidates, ballot initiatives, scare-mongering. Figured: Why not? the money's green enough, and my own party isn't beating down my door. Besides, who really is swayed by this stuff? Everybody knows it's just Good-ol'-Boy electioneering.
Couple years later I heard a program on This American Life about folks losing their homes and being deported because of the new laws that were enacted because of said ballot initiatives.

Yes to all of the above.
Recently I accepted an audiobook narration that - once I got into it - became much more "colorful" than what I'm comfortable with. But I'd accepted the offer, and was well into it. I completed the project, but had it published under a pseudonym so that my name wouldn't be associated with it. _________________ Scott R. Pollak
