Specifically this site is joined for a free demo critique, to publicise an event, sell a coaching programme, find work and SEO.
"Hello, I'm networking. I don't remember my name but I am networking. Find my name at www.philipbanks.com"
An internet is full of people (Brands) behaving this way so it's not a Voice Over world problem.
Here is the magic of this site. At some point it evolved from being lines of code into something real, something that lives, something that is difficult to value in dollar terms. BrandX gets bored so moves on to LinkedVoicesKansas, a great way of "marketing" or hiding in a public place.
I derive my delight from living here in knowing that there are people who will read this who simply do not like me, who pretend to like me just in case, who believe that in the VO world that I am SOMEBODY not simply an old man in Portgordon trying to make a living. There are also people here who actually know me too!
Here you are allowed to disagree, you're allowed to not like someone, you're allowed to say things are great when they're not, you're allowed to ask for applause, you're allowed to ask for help and you are expected to give more than you get in order to see the best in every area. Sound like a website to you or something real, something living?
Open hand to give, not open hand to receive. Beneath the code, the url, the text and the SEO parts there exists real people, everyone of them a bright shining star, let 'em twinkle in your life. |

First, just a comment on Jeff's "searchable" comment... Facebook groups are, indeed, very searchable... but only from within Facebook. It is, just like AOL used to be, a walled garden. Do a goole search for anything VO related and you're sure to get some hits from VO-BB (not entres nous posts)... but nothing from Facebook.
Like it or not, many people find FB (including the VO groups) so full of noise, grandiosity, idiots, and self-proclaimed experts that it fails miserably at being a source of valid information. It can be fun... it satisfies certain needs (needs that FB has convinced us we have)... but it is, ultimately, a massive time-sink.
VO-BB, on the other hand, is the antithesis of all that. It is a real community with standards (i.e. rules) that keep everyone on track. Of course, we have the occasional "hissy-fit"... but don't all families?
I have fallen into the FB trap myself. I will attempt to address that. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I like the idea as well, George.
And Phillip, what about the folks who haven't met you yet, but are still trying to figure out what your game is while hoping you are using your powers for good? _________________ Greg Littlefield

I spend a great deal of time vanquishing my foes and after breakfasting on a few stolen kittens my plan for total world domination plods along nicely.
Stand in my way and my two Eastern European assistants will either fly you somewhere or kill you.

The Eastern European villainesses in knee-high boots always give it away.
The clean-shaven noggin should have as well, though. _________________ Greg Littlefield

When Facebook goes the way of MySpace, we'll still be here, and our conversations archived in perpetuity by our board Czar's next of kin, and their next of kin. Oh, and the "Wayback Machine"... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

LOL. Ello could have been okay if
1.) It wasn't ello.co *seriously???*
2.) It wasn't run by a bunch of lazy slackers. And by "lazy slackers" I don't mean 1990s type slackers hobbled by substances: I mean people that definitely have their noggins lodged well upside their posterior regions, never to be retrieved. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Facebook will be around a while, but they certainly do have three major issues that they have to deal with to ensure longevity. They need to change:
a) The platform itself.
b) Facebook corporate polices.
c) The people who use it.
Fix those three things and it will be just fine. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I, too am guilty of not being here as much as I used to. I'm a wicked monkey! The VO-BB was one of the pillars of my voiceover career when I went full-time almost ten years ago and for that I'm eternally grateful. I'll make it a point to annoy you nice folks more often... _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

I haven't been here in months and months. I suppose this has a lot to do with how little I care to hear and/ or discuss the v.o. "business". This doesn't mean that I don't care about it, but that there just isn't time for it, and it no longer seems to float my boat like it once did.
I'm extremely active on various social media, where I have found I have been somewhat successful in developing an ROI.
I do miss some of the witty banter, although the little bit I get to see often seems rather witless and I wish I could say that I still care about those new to voice over, but not so much as I once did.
I will make it a point to stop in a bit more frequently.
Best to you all,
