I've just discovered there is an internet radio show called DJ Hall of Fame that runs on Saturdays at noon. For some reason, they have decided to feature a sample of my radio show from 1974 on today's broadcast. At the moment, I'm listening to a 1974 aircheck of my friend (and then competitor) Dick McDonough from WDRC in Hartford.

My 40+ year old show from crosstown rival WPOP will be featured in the second hour (1 PM Eastern time, today, Saturday, August 1).

Should you care to listen, here's the link: http://stations.pronetlicensing.com/rewound/home.html

Or recording you...

I'll bet it was weird to listen to. Did you even know that aircheck existed?

I had no idea. It was just some radio fanboy who rolled into town and recorded what he heard that day. There are some airchecks of mine that I am aware of that are on Ed Brouder's www.manfrommars.com website, some stuff that I might have supplied to him myself. But this was new to me.

Back in the day, I was probably taken aback by an occasional autograph request or fan letter (they were few and far between), so these things don't totally shock me, but it is still weird to think that anybody regarded me and my fellow disk jockeys as "celebrities," minor as we may have been.

As the representative of my (then) radio station, I was invited to play in a celebrity softball game that we sponsored at the (then) Dolphins/Marlins stadium. At the end of the game, kids were running all over the field getting autographs from some of the other players.

A kid who couldn't have been more than 8 years old ran up to me, shoved a softball and a Sharpie into my hand and asked for an autograph. I said, "Sure," and looked down at the ball to look for an open spot to sign. The first few names I read were Don Shula, Bob Griese, Dan Marino, Sugar Ray Leonard, Gloria Estefan, and a couple of the Bee Gees. As nicely as I could, I told the kid that he really didn't want we to "ruin" that ball for him, and I gave it back without signing it.

If I'd really been on my toes that day, it woulda' been a lot more fun to sign Mick Jagger's name before handing it back to him.

Should anybody be interested in wasting part, or all, of a half hour, listening to what I had to train myself to stop sounding like in order to become a voiceoverist, here is my portion of last Saturday's DJ Hall of Fame:

The best part of that link is the pic in the right corner!

Didn't Howard Stern come through Hartford at some point?

Lee your radio voice doesn't sound nearly as pukey as some others I've heard from back in the day.

Now, that's what I call a compliment! Thanks. cool

And yes, Howard Stern was on a competing station (WCCC) about four years after this. Our morning guy was the Greaseman. By the time Sterm was in the market, I had been fired from this job (format change from Top 40 to All News), worked at an ad agency, and been re-hired by WPOP as the Production Director.

I believe this is the pic to which you refer.

As a bonus, here is an even earlier one, from my DJ days at WFEA in Manch-Vegas (before it was Manch-Vegas).
