I like Deirdre's rules alot...and tried to follow them...even though, I broke two of them (well...kinda).
I use a photo, 'cause I'm an on-camera talent, and I think it enhances the site. (could be totally wrong)
I also use a one-word embedded sound, but I used Deirdre's voice (hope you don't mind my saying D Cooper)...and it was Frank F's big idea to begin with. Personally, I'm not sure it adds all that much.
Joe, I'm not all that enamored of your drawing. I mean that in the nicest way. You have a GREAT face for camera. It's a nice characterization of you....but to what end? If you want a pic, put it on a secondaary page.
Simple. Simple. Simple for the opening page. The font you chose "shouts" at me. Something more subtle might work better.
My 2-cents.

No, your designs aren't "that bad". It's simply worthwhile (and humorous) to see what mistakes other people make. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Sorry if you thought I was commenting on your website. Not so, though I can now see where the name of the site I recommended might create some misunderstanding. Webpagesthatsuck promotes "design follows usability," (or as Frank Lloyd Wright said, "Form follows function"). It's probably one of the oldest sites out there on the subject of site design. |

Joe,
After all that's been said..I do like option 2 better. Looks cleaner layout-wise. Sure you're looking at some total re-thinks by now though.

Thanks again to all for your thoughtful comments.
StevenAnthony - I know you didn't mean to say my site ideas suck, I was just kidding.
Courvo - Thanks for your comments. You remind me of my improv teacher. One of the nicest people I know. Sorry, I didn't mean to yell.
Dierdre - Thanks for re-posting the rules for me. I've been mulling them over.
OK, so I went to the memberlist on the board and visited every website of every member who has a website. Some of these websites are absolutely amazing, others not so much. Not many are following "DBs Rules".
At any rate, I thought about what I saw and the comments I've been given and I have some new ideas to run by you guys so without further ado (adieu?) I give you . . .
These are the original ones
Option 1
Option 2
These are some new ideas
Option 3
Option 4
Option 5
As my mind continues to percolate on all the information I've been given and all the sites I've explored, I will probably come up with a few other concepts. Thanks to all for your comments.

Joe,
I like option 5 the best. Clean. Easy to read and understand. _________________ Be well,

It's between 4 and 5 for me, favoring 5.
6 looks like a Wikipedia entry.
Keep on pluggin' Joe. It's fun to watch this evolve. |

Don't forget, my rules are "Rules". In quotes. More like completely selfish recommendations based on my own web searches for talent.
I know what I like, what makes me stay and look, what makes me look askance.
They're all take-'em-or-eave-'em.
But if you ask for my feedback on your website, those "rules" of mine are the basis of my critique . _________________ DBCooperVO.com

#5 gets my vote. The only thing that sticks out is the Demo player (and this goes for all options). It doesn't work with the rest of the design. |

Yep.
Option 5.
Another "rule" I'm adding to my design recommendations is
ONE TYPEFACE.
Period.
I had a long distance fistfight with Fraley over that issue.
IF you ever do White-on-black, you have to remember that drop-shadows DON'T READ WELL. Use a colored letter face with a white "outer glow" if you want a white mist around your text. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Joe, my website isn't the greatest and needs a complete redesign but that'll happen after I redo the demo. One thing at a time! I would recommend 2 sites, 1 for on camera that can have the blog, links and all the same things that the vo site now has, and the second one for the vo. I have the on camera site link to the vo site but not have the vo site link to the on camera. Theatre of the mind and all that. I like the black on white but then the player in a different color is kind of jarring. Just my opinion. _________________ Pam Tierney

Joe... I like #5 a lot. Bright and direct. There are probably a few things you could do to fluff up the site... but I'll leave those suggestions to the others.
One thing I'll put up for consideration. Your sentence that says...I would appreciate the opportunity to audition for you to see if I might be right for your next project.
Never BEG to audition... and never question your own resources "if I might be right for your next project"
How does this sound... and what does it tell the client? Let me show you what I can do for your next project!
It tells the client that you are confident in what you do, and that YOU are the person who can make that project work! (something like that)

Baily,
That is GOOD!
You are absolutely right. That was the weakest possible way to ask for an audition. I appreciate your copywriting.
