Yesterday a thought crossed my mind. The hollerdays are 4 months away and like last year I'll be spending them alone in Portgordon which is a waste of the only real chunk of free time I get during the year. Why not farm the Collies out to Anne for (roughly ) the ten days 18th to 28th December, fly to NYC, buy a crappy car and drive route 66 to LA? In LA sell the car for, anything at all, fly back to NYC and home again, home again jiggidy-jig!. Ten grand well spent, I think.
Christmas has no religious significance for me. I don't eat too much because it makes me feel ill, alcohol sends me to sleep, I can't do it all for the kids as I have none and of course my friends will be spending time with their families. No complaints here, just da faxs!
A cunning plan is forming in my tortured brain. World domination or ROAD TRIP? Mmmmmmmmmmm lemmee see. |

i think that would ve a VERY cool trip --- a non-interstate highway tour! i believe rt. 66 starts in chicago - but there are other roads that connect it to new york - many of them paved & everything. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

As you can see I have done no research so far other than I can do it. I have over $67.34 in my checking account so all expenses are covered.
I shall start in a Chicago as I have not been there. It seems rude to start where the road (route) does not. Plan phase one established - Start at starting point as opposed to the UNstarting point. |

Some people highly recommend you fly into Boston instead. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Because of TV shows, movies and one old pop-song from the era, we Yanks. (a.k.a. "statesiders") have some kind of attachment and affection for Route 66.
In my more youthful days when young children of mine needed to be transported to see their grandparents, I made a lot of trips in the Midwest where segment by segment, Route 66 was being superseded by the new Interstate system. They kind of butchered some of the romanticism in Illinois and Missouri, but the tourist-thirsty states further west seem to have kept more fragments of the "classic road" and it's architectural curiosities alive.
On my most recent trip in that direction, a bit further south at the very southern edge of the Ozarks, early on a Saturday morning I blew past an Art Deco style motel in some little Arkansas burg. I was much too much still asleep to wheel around and grab some pictures. (I bring this up because it had the look-and-feel of some of the Route 66 mystique. )
I've got one more trip to the Ozarks planned in early October. Maybe I can get me one of those Lumix cameras that did such a great job of capturing the walrus and get an image of the 1930s 1940s motel that has survived down in Perry County, Arkansas... along the Fourche La Fave River. |

vernon is right --- in illinois (for sure) the historic route has been gobbled up by I-55 - but you can skirt the big road for the small towns and there are still some wonders to behold. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Fly to Boston or NY, get yourself a used Corvette convertible for under ten grand, be the catalyst for a get-together in the Big Apple (just scant weeks after the annual VO mixer), drive to Chicago by way of Pittsburgh so you can see the Souers, Then commence to get your kicks on Route 66. What could be more fun! _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

How about renting a car for a one-way drive? Save yourself the time of having to buy and sell... |

Apparently, at that time of year, the demand for minivans is low. You could rent one for around $700 for the full ten days. Other vehicles would range from around $1400 to $2000. You would, of course, be responsible for fuel costs, tolls, insurance, etc., as you would if you were to buy and sell a car. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

It's my day off and I've got some time, so just for fun I did a search. Enterprise car rentals allows one-way rentals (as do most other rental companies - I just happened to pick Enterprise).
Dec. 22 - Jan. 4 Chicago airport to LAX
$2,130 for an "intermediate" size car for the trip (didn't check to see what mileage may be included)
You might be able to pick up a used car for $2,130 - but, if you rent a new car - less hassle with possible break-downs along the way AND no time and trouble of buy/sell at the beginning and end of journey. Of course, you don't recoup your money at the end with a car sale but then you might not anyway...and I really wouldn't want to make that sort of trip in a clunker.
Petrol here is running at $3.02 a gallon - who knows what it will be by then - and the Midwest will likely be lower cost petrol than where I am (Oregon).
Well, that was fun. Hope it was somewhat useful as well |

The numbers I got were also from Enterprise (my favorite car rental company) but based on La Guardia to LAX. I looked for Corvette convertibles, but they didn't seem to have any available that week.
Buying a car would also require registering it, insuring it, and depending upon the jurisdiction, paying property tax on it. Would definitely be a faff. It might make sense to purchase a car that is in demand in the UK but sells for considerably less in the US, driving it across country and then shipping it home. But then you'd need to have Edd China fix it up before selling it on for a profit. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

What Lee said. I noticed they were out of a number of car classes. Might be a sign to book early. |
