Since I moved here I've noticed more businesses closing than opening.

A while ago a shop closed and remained empty for a few months then ..

FANFARE

Buckie Alterations was born.

Every day she sits and sews. Customers come in, tell her what they want, she says how much and when it will be ready then gives them a ticket to present on collection. She returns to her work, sitting and sewing. She's Portuguese, late 40's to early 50's. 9 to 5 Monday til Friday, Saturday 9 til 1pm she sits and sews. Customers come in, tell her what they want, she says how much and when it will be ready then gives them a ticket to present on collection. She returns to her work, sitting and sewing. Sunday is her day off.

She probably does not blog, tweet, factube, contribute to I-SO-SEW BB, work on her brand, attend to her marketing and I doubt that her regional industry was funded by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise council following advice from one of their expert business coaches and a skilfully prepared business plan including a 5 year profit and loss forecast.

SEWcon doesn't exist.
There will be no SEW2015.
She does not bid for jobs on SEW123 or Sewin'.Ay

Every day she sits and sews. Customers come in, tell her what they want, she says how much and when it will be ready then gives them a ticket to present on collection. She returns to her work, sitting and sewing.

For us things are complicated. Today I decided to render them uncomplicated!

First things first, name change - Silas Marner, as I'm Weaver, in a manner of speaking.

My sewing job? Ready tomorrow, 6 quid.

Brill. Simple marketizing. I shall hang this over the front door and give it a whirl.

Why is it that this beautiful picture you've painted is made dramatically more so when I picture this woman speaking in a delightful Portugese accent. Would the picture be as appealing if she were from, say, Boston...somehow, I think not.

Ahhh, the magic of a foreign accent....

A magical minute made all the more so by the accent and the "yours to serve" attitude which is something we in the UK and in the US lack. Confidence and arrogance are NOT the same, the latter is always born out of insecurity. We all really need to win that battle.

Travelling back by train from VOX earlier this year we were talking about the VOICE OVER GREATS, how they all earned 7 figures and had numerous MASSIVE YACHTS!

"When one of these people does a movie trailer, one that I see in my local cinema, one seen in every English speaking cinema IN THE WORRRRLD, how much do they get paid?" I asked.

It took one of our group about 15 minutes to fail to answer the question. For the record, the answer is a number and thanks to SAG-AFTRA it would not be a round number so the reply "Oooooooo about ten grand would've done".
Note in Buckie Alterations a lady who KNEW her business knew the job would be six quid. Here's my favourite respone when I don't know something - (CLEARS THROAT). You may like to take notes and de- construct this at a later date. Ready?

"I don't know"

If you have confidence issues try saying it in a Portuguese accent. I know nothing except how to weave words together.

To Philip -- and to many Americans, as well -- a Boston accent IS a foreign accent. Wink

"I don't know"

This. I'd already thought long ago that not enough people spoke those words often enough. Then, just over 10 years ago, the floodgates opened and so many having any experience with a microphone and who are now armed with a computer and internet connection appointed him or herself instant voice-over expert. We all appreciate those who want to be helpful. However, we need to keep in mind that one can do a lot of damage by "advising" others using few, if any, facts when, instead, they can be of no greater service than by simply saying, "I'm sorry; I'd really like to help, but I just don't know." THAT can be THE most-helpful thing one can say.

Giving misinformation to someone already ignorant of the facts can be (unintended) sabotage.

Indeed you are a weaver. And I feel like a kindergartener sitting crosslegged at storytime, enthralled.

I was on a business path of my own stumblings, simply because I had no connections, no guidance. Now, in the few days since joining this forum, after scouring and pouring over words from all of you, I've completely changed directions, and finally feel like I know at least in what direction to head, with integrity, without wasting countless auditions on some P2P begging someone to hire me for the lowest bid.

So for all of us fledglings out there, weave on weavers...we are in your debt.

I quite like the Silas Marner approach.

Get up, wash, dress and breakfast.
To the left a pile of stuff
In front a spinny weavy thing.
To the right a fresh pile of linen ready for collection by a local merchant.
My role, as Silas, is to take from left, work the front which adds to the right.
I'll do this for a few hours then take a break.
At some point the local merchant will collect the linen and hand me a few coins for my trouble.
In the evening if there is nothing to do at the Quaker assembly rooms I'll sit by the log fire after supper and play my Lute or read something racy and modern by Mr Shakespeare.

Now, Master or Mistress Voiceoverist how goes thy day? That which resembles not the Weaver's day shalt thou throw the **** out of thy life lest it burden thee in thine heart, mind, body and soul.

In the local Inn Marcus hands he around a srcoll.

"Brethren, make thine mark, use quill to make ye mischief, supplication, illustration or announcement of joy or vexation. Then pass the scroll to thine brother. He makes thine acquaintance and gives approval to thine sundry scribble, makes he his own and passeth scroll to the next brother!"

"Marcus thou art a master! What name givest thou this distraction?"

"Facescroll, Brother!"

Lee, I guess your right! Though I'm from Alaska, and a Bostonian accent is foreign to me too Smile The first time I met my college roommate I felt like I needed a translator. To her credit, she did leave me with the wonderful habit of adding "wicked" to any phrase for emphasis.

Had to share that one with my husband. Smile

Philip, you paint such an inspirational picture with your Silas Marner talk. You almost persuade me to give George Eliot another go. I love English literature, but Middlemarch didn't do it for me, so I never bothered with Silas Marner. Now you've got me rethinking...
