My nemesis at the moment is birds. the high frequency chirping bleeds through when they're right outside the studio. I have a piece of pvc pipe I use to whack the bushes outside the house to encourage them to hurry up and migrate already. _________________ Alex Rain |

I'm about 100% certain I've told this story here before, but what the heck.
In the 1980s I was a video producer for the phone company (BellSouth). We were on a shoot somewhere in Louisiana to interview the CEO of a hospital that used our phone systems and services. I decided it would be nice to interview him outdoors, under the shade of a big, old tree.
We prepped, set up cameras, miked him and began rolling. Our sound guy suddenly calls for us to cut, saying he was picking up some sort of weird electrical interference that was kind of coming and going. We checked cables, grounding, everything. No luck. The interference was still there, and still intermittent.
Finally we figured it out and slapped our heads in collective unison. It was the cycling of the cicadas in the nearby trees. All of us being from the South, we were immune to it. We never even noticed it anymore.
So for the rest of the shoot, we'd be on standby until they cycled "down" in their buzzing, then squeeze in a quick 5-10 seconds of comments, wait for the next cycle to come and go, and then repeat. We did, eventually, get a decent video out of it. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

I now live on the western slope of Colorado, 8 miles south of a small town, in the middle of hundreds of square miles of farmland. The utter solitude and quiet that prevails here is salve for my soul. Standing at night in the yard, staring at the vastness of the skies and hearing only crickets and frogs is amazing.
Noise sucks. And truly can sap the joy out of you. |
THIS is why we moved to the mountains a few years ago, a few hours north and east of Scott!
Scott, have you been over to Arches yet? It's not that far from your 20! _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
