I would just send a sample to the folks at ACX. Let them examine it and tell you if needs adjusting.

You don't need to quote any posts if your response is right after. We're pretty smart and can follow a conversation.

Paul if you need a little guidance with this first project I daresay there are some helpful souls here who will do their best to assist if you get in a jam.

That includes me.

Congrats. As a seasoned audiobook narrator - albeit with about 1/10th of Jeff's experience! - I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts back here once you've completed this.

Hello Everybody.

I'm 2/3 through the book and I thought it might be a good time to answer this question. I just took another offer so I'm going to be backed up with work for quite a while, even as I continue voice training,

Anywhoo...The process has been fun. I haven't found anything unexpected yet. I think I mentioned I jumped into the business with the intentions of doing audio books first. So I did a LOT of research on ACX. Quality standards, equipment setup, deadlines. I had a pretty firm grasp on how that process worked, at least for ACX. Still, there are a few takeaways.

Editing is a beast! Everybody knows that. I'm slow, really slow. About 4 hours of work for 1 recorded hour. Both books I have accepted are Royalty Share only, so I'm trying to do all the work to save myself money. Having said that, I'm already trying to line up local editors for the time when I have some PFH work. Something to look forward to.

Another is mastering different voices. I can change my pitch, which is fine, but I'm having trouble remembering what the heck I did for characters who don't appear in every chapter. I'm having to go back to previous chapters, and listen to myself so I can copy the voices again.

And speaking of voices. I mentioned this on Facebook, so if you are in the ACX group you've seen this, but after all this character work, I CAN'T STOP THE VOICES IN MY HEAD! I keep thinking to myself in the tones of the characters I've been using for the book. Very interesting side effect. Hopefully they won't start telling me to do evil things. Shocked

All in all, this has been a great experience. I do have 1 worry. I have submitted 17 chapters of a 24 chapter book. I'm nearly done but I have yet to get any notes from the author. I have been communicating with him all along about other things, like pronunciations, styles and even marketing, but no notes. I'm worried that at the end he's going to hit me with 3 hours of corrections, and as a Royalty Share deal, I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with that. Jeff and other have offered suggestions for this on Facebook. I'd love to hear other opinions.

That's it for now. Thanks for reading.

Paul

if you've got a lot of characters popping in & out - create a folder with a short snippet if each you can access quickly for a reminder.

Just chiming in late to add my congrats to you, Paul! Smile I've done a handful of audiobooks and found that they are not my bag and I am terribly slow and cumbersome with them, so no good advice from me, I'm afraid Smile I have tons of respect for audiobook narrators, though...it's quite the marathon!

Congrats on your new title!
My advice would be to hire someone to QC your work and give you corrections to do. My first audiobook has horrible mistakes because I didn't have it QC'ed. Rookie error. Another piece of advice is to hire someone to master it after it's been QC'ed and corrected. There are services that are inexpensive for both QC and mastering. There's a list of folks who do this stuff in the "documents" section of the Audiobook Crowd Facebook group.
Other than that, read the book ahead of time for pronunciations and character clues -- relax, and have fun!
Smile

Bunch of wimps! - Cold read, baby... cold read. Where's your sense of adventure?

Actually... better still, get the author/rights holder to supply you with a list of characters, their traits, and his (non-binding) impression of how they should sound (accent and demeanor).

Mastering is easy... but bloody awful if you get it wrong. Depending on what DAW you are using, you can set up a stack (or whatever) to do everything in one pass (once you've nailed down what you need to do for your voice and your raw recordings). General rule of thumb... if you think you need to do X, then you should probably do X-n Smile

As Paul mentioned, these are royalty share projects, so if he's paying for QC and mastering, he's in the hole. Would those of you more experienced in audiobooks than I still recommend outsourcing these tasks under those circumstances?
