Fifty years ago today, November 9, 1965, was a Tuesday and the evening rush hour was in full swing. At about 5:16pm, a 230-kilovolt transmission line near Ontario, Canada failed, causing failures in several other heavily loaded lines. This created a domino effect that brought down the entire Northeastern transmission network, plunging some 30 million people in eight U.S. states and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec into darkness. Dan Ingram was on the air at WABC:

WABC stayed on the air as long as it did in this recording because their transmitter is in Lodi NJ, which was on a different electrical grid. What you hear at the end of the recording was due to their New York City studio eventually losing power. With a box full of records, Ingram was eventually able to navigate the standstill traffic and get to the transmitter site to continue broadcasting when other stations could not. _________________ Mike

I was in English class when the lights went out. Next door, in the science building, we could see them lighting bunsen burners. Two weeks later, the science building burned down. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
