I have to get a phone patch of some kind. Part of me prefers something like a That2 for reliability but the new yamaha mixers supposedly allow you to "flip a switch" and send audio back through skype.
I have about zero knowledge of using a mixer and i'm not crazy about adding one since I dont even know if it goes before or after my interface but if it works as well as they say I suppose it would eliminate another piece of hardware since I wouldnt need the That2 or some other version of patch/hybrid.
Anybody tried the AG03?
Also, is that area on the AG03 the 3/4 where it has the Dry Channel 1/2, input mix, and loopback the same as a mackie 3/4 alt bus? So confused.
Thanks |

If the AGO3 acts like my MOTU, it should be easy to set up a phone session on Skype.
I use a MOTU 828 MKII interface and MOTU's Audio Desk software. My computer sees the MOTU when it's on as a source of audio input and output. When Skype is on I go to Skype Preferences, and then to the Audio/Video section. There I can choose which Microphone to use, in this case "MOTU 828mk2" shows up as a choice, and I choose that. Now whatever is in channel 1 (of my 8 channels) is now my Skype mic. Then I go to Speakers in Audio/Video and choose "MOTU" again and the audio from their calls goes into my headphones (plugged into the MOTU) but not into my audio recording. A perfect setup.
I hope your choice there will work as easily.

I've wanted to try the AG03 since seeing one at NAMM in January.
Seems a really great solution for Skype loop needs. If the pre is really clean, and the on-board DSP works well, it seems a killer companion to an iPad or PC. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George Whittam has now done a YouTube video about the Yamaha and he seems to like it a lot. Sorry, but I cannot get the link on this old iPad.
Should be easy to find though. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Did you watch that video? I've never seen George that excited. I think he may adopt the AG03!
And Yarg28. I don't know why you need to wait for my neophyte opinion. Just buy the thing for $150. Seriously, George loves it. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

Let us know what you think of it, I've been recommending it all over the place. A client compared it to his Scarlett 2i2 and said "it's much warmer sounding" whatever that means. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Didn't mean to speak for you George!
Early returns are good. It's giving me a good clean sound, with a decent noise floor. No hissing or popping which was the issue I was having with the 2i2 on Windows 10.
George, I'm not getting quite the crazy amounts of gain you described in Whittams World. I'm still at about 3 O'Clock to get levels to peak at -6 in Audacity. The Hi and Low gain buttons don't seem to have any effect at all.
Here's a file I just recorded if you want to listen.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4hkhfj59002wijf/Joeris%20Paul%20Stefano.mp3?dl=0
Looking forward to trying out other features soon.
EDIT. I just pulled out my old Macbook Pro (circa 2009) and plugged in the AG03. What a difference! I see now what George means. I had the Gain dial at only about 12 O'clock and was at -6 db in Audacity.
I now think, (as suspected all along) that Windows 10 just stinks for audio. I've been through 4 interfaces this week. (thank goodness for Amazon's return policy) and all of them exhibited the same problem, very low gain in Windows 10. This was true no matter the microphone too.
Of course this leaves me with a new problem, what to do with this windows machine I bought specifically for voice over. doh! _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

I've yet to get a Windows 10 machine in for testing to see how it handles sound when using the Windows sound drivers. You might get an entirely different result using an ASIO driver such as "ASIO4ALL", but a Windows geek here can chime in on that. There is a good reason why I'm such a Mac recommending freak for VO actors... Apple had creatives in mind and simplified the audio side of things when they created the Core Audio Driver system. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I did try ASIO4all too. Same results.
It's all over the web what a mess the audio drivers are on Windows 10. Not just Voice actors but musicians too.
I think I may just give up and use my Macbook. My only real reason for using the Windows 10 machine anyway was because this particular one has an Intel Core M processor and SSD drive, making it totally silent.
It was a great booth companion, but not if the recordings are crap! _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |
