Many of you already gave me a warm welcome to the community here, so I’ll skip repeating the details of “my story”. Don’t worry. It’s lame anyway… you’re not missing much. 
I know that it’s no substitute for the professional coaching that I should be pursuing, but I’ve been contemplating this Getting Started In Voice Over online course being offered through the local community college. Seems like it could offer a lot of helpful information, but if it’s just a “pay me for this class and I’ll give you the secret to starting a six-figure VO career overnight” type thing, then I’m not particularly interested.
Any thoughts? Anyone know the teacher?

It's not the single-class, fly-by-night, offer-you-a-weekend-at-our-Vermont Chalet-and-do-a-demo-for-you thing.
This has a real, quantifiable curriculum.
Go for it, indeed.

Looks fine to me. My only concern would be is he telling you what you should do or is he saying "this is what I did and how it worked for me"? The difference is HUGE!

It looks comprehensive in the mechanics except for two things I consider critical to learning our business. It appears that there is no face to face contact with the instructor, and at no time do you get behind a mic and read and get critique, read and get critique, read and get critique.... you get the idea.
It's a bit like learning how to play golf without ever stepping on to a practice range or putting green with an instructor.

That's reasonable advice.... for those who live within reasonable distance of a face-to-face instructor. Or for those who are far enough along in their exploration that the time has come to dig deep into the wallet and travel to some distant location in search of a face to face instructor. (Maybe a Skype session might be in order under these circumstances.)
Take at look at the profile of the Original Poster. You ever been to Baraboo? What are the chances there is a face to face instructor in his backyard? If things go well, in about 5 months I will be relocated to the biggest nearby "burg"... this little place called Madison, WI. I've already reached out to Tom and suggest that when I get there, we've got to get together at The Great Dane and he can teach me how Wisconsonites drink beer...*** and I will share with him what little I know about voice-over. And together he and I are going to find out whether there are credible face-to-face instructors in Madison.... or do we both go scouting in Chicago?
*** I'm not sure if it is true or not, but I have it on good authority that Germans up there think they own the patent on making beer.
There is more than sophmoric silly humor to my post. I have this dream that someone in our group will step up and tell both me and Tom about someone in that area that is a great face-to-face coach in South Central Wisconsin. |

David's great, but I don't think he'll be teaching in Baraboo, WI. It appears to be an online class taught through written material and a series of pre-recorded audio presentations.
From the course description:
There are no live real-time requirements or meetings. You decide when you participate.
For the best learning, participants should log into the course on 2-3 different days of the week.
For each Unit, you will:
– Read the print readings (about 20 pages a week)
– Have the option of accessing the online readings
– Listen to the audio presentation for the Unit and view the slides
– Have the option of taking a self-quiz to see how much you have learned

Is there NO critique for recordings?
The instructor is supposed to join in the class discussions, or am I misreading the class description?
In the online classes Younger Bear has taken, there's teacher feedback to assignments. He took an online photography class— submitted photos and got critique from the teacher and discussion among the students.

Sounds like a straight forward online course. I actually work for a company that produces these. Not sure it's the greatest format for a voice over course. There will be very little instructor interaction BY VOICE.

If you do go for it, make sure you are proactive in reaching out to the instructor. The format allows them to do their job without much required personal interaction. Basically what it says in the description is the bare minimum requirements, check in once per day, as Doug quoted
There are instructors, who do just that. Then there are those who go above and beyond. Most are receptive to responding to questions and comments from the students.
When we get complaints from students about instructor interaction, we find that the student was very passive and waiting for the teacher to reach out to them. It doesn't work like that in online teaching. If you don't hear from a student, you assume they are doing fine learning at their own pace.
