About 10-11 years ago, I wrote a review of the Kreg jig for Woodcraft Magazine. The best part: I got to keep the kit. |
So you are obviously multi-talent gifted. It's one thing to make stuff by trial and error like I do. It's another to be one that they look to, to review the stuff that makes the stuff. Woodcraft Magazine is no slouch. You must know your stuff.

+1 to the pocket hole recommendation. Small learning curve with huge upside.
Rick, it's hard to tell in the picture but is that lectern solid hardwood or is it plywood wrapped in hardwood trim? I really love the look of it. Looks like a natural maple with urethane finish.
Just curious.
thanks |

The working area where the keyboard sits is Maple ply. Everything else is solid Maple. Re the finish, I have a guy down the street who's a cabinet maker. He uses a conversion varnish from Sherwin Williams, that you have to buy by the drum. He built my desk out of a 3" thick piece of solid Maple (talk about a hunk of wood) and used the finish on that. When I built the podium / lectern, I asked him to shoot it for me. Turned out really nice. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Most of the time, that's exactly what I build. I aspire to create something that looks as good as Rick's studio. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Man o' Manischewitz ! Does that look great
Is that cork on some of the lower parts of the walls in the studio or a darkened panel ?
Thanks for showing it from the dream to fruition!
Getting inspired to turn my office are into a second recording space. Don't have the skills or the do-ray-me to make it as nice as yours, but who knows.
Well done Rick! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

It's a combination of things. The panels with fabric are OC703. The lower part on two of the inside walls is carpet. The door and one of the panels you see on the far wall is Tectum.
This view shows the inside walls and monitor wall lined with Tectum.
I originally had carpet around the lower half of the entire recording space, but there was too much reflection, so I ripped it out on the right half and lined it all with Tectum. I basically played with the combination of everything until I got it to sound the way I wanted. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Beautiful! But you must have good eyes. I'd need binoculars to read from that monitor. _________________ Bob Ransom

Pictures are often deceiving. If it was life size, you'd see that it's no problem. One of my pet peeves is when clients send you a script that's so small you can't read it. The monitor takes up two thirds of the wall and the font can be made as big or small as you choose, making the copy much more readable than when it's on a sheet of paper. Plus, when the client makes changes during the session, I can change it with the keyboard rather than writing with my chicken scratch, which even to me, is almost illegible. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

It is absolutely great, Rick! It's way better than almost every commercial studio I've ever worked in!
A question re ventilation..is there a system inside the booth, or is it only in office/control room? |
