Unless you've been under a rock for the past few days you know about the hoards of people lined up, camped out for days in some places, to get a chance to buy a Sony PlayStation 3 when they were released yesterday.

From The Boston Globe, 11/18/06:

PlayStation 3 hopefuls overwhelm mall
Restless crowd dispersed by police at Copley Place
November 18, 2006

Nearly a dozen Boston police cruisers rushed to Copley Place mall yesterday morning when a crowd of 400 people clamoring for the new Sony PlayStation 3 overwhelmed mall security.

No one was hurt, and the crowd dispersed when ordered by police.

Some video game enthusiasts asserted they had been waiting in line for three days for a chance to purchase the game system for $500 to $600. The crowd had waited outside through a stormy night with high winds and heavy rain.

Some patrons contended they were told they would be allowed inside the mall at 6 a.m. for the 8 a.m. opening of a Sony store.

However, the crowd became restless at about 5:30 a.m., and dozens of police officers rushed to the scene.

More HERE.

Ah yes, lets stay out all night for days in a row outside a retail store, get in fights for line position, get SHOT for line position, sell the gadget on ebay for thousands to an equally stupid sucker, auction of your spot in line.....all for video games.

The Japanese have yet one more reason to be laughing their asses off at those stupid Americans.

I'm just not sure if the dumbing down of America is truly ahead of us or has already set up shop and working steadily.

And these are the kids upon whose shoulders the fate of the world and my retirement is based?!

We are all soooooo screwed!

That picture is PRICELESS! Having lived in Boston, I can hear the cop's accent through the bull horn and, of course, the attitude with which his message is delivered.

That's one of the nice things about getting a little older and wiser. You realize that NOTHING on this Earth, especially a play thing, is worth waiting for in lines like that and getting into riots like that. You wait a few days until the hubbub dies down and saunter in and get one. And if they run out, hey, you wait a month or two and then you buy the damned thing.

Or, if you're REALLY, REALLY smart, you pre-order one and let the damned UPS man bring it right to your door. No rain. No bullhorns. No bullshit.

Natural selection doesn't always work as well as you'd like sometimes.
