My iMac has a 256 and it is about half full. I save all my audio onto a 2TB external drive, so the only thing that ever gets dropped on there are documents and programs (and the accumulation of crap that just seems to appear over the years). It's had the SSD for about 2 years. 500 really isn't that expensive though if you do the install.

Note that as of 2014 the Mac Mini has RAM that you can NOT upgrade so get what you want from the get go because there is no turning back as it is integrated into the logic board.

Thanks, Jason! Duly noted. I decided awhile back that I wasn't settling for less than 16 gb RAM, and I actually found a few deals on macs with 512 gb ssd's that weren't that much more expensive, so that's what I'm saving my pennies for!

I have a new-ish Macbook Pro that lives under my desk, hooked up to a monitor, mouse, and keyboard on top. I treat it like a desktop, basically (haven't even moved it in about 6 months). It has an SSD (256G) drive so it's quiet as a whisper. After a year or so my drive started to get uncomfortably full, so I just copied a ton of old work to google drive and deleted it locally. Easy peasy.

I've got a silent MacBook Air 13 for travel. I'm looking for more of a desktop solution

I bought a used Macbook Air (late 2011) to use for my recording on ebay for about $500. It has a Thunderbolt port so I can use one of my interfaces with it.

I have two interfaces, an original Apogee Duet, and a TAC-2R. I haven't seen any reviews about it, but I'm happy with it. It seems to sound as good as the Apogee.

The Air is a good little machine for just capturing the audio, then I can either Air Drop or use a thumb drive to transfer it to my other machine for editing.

I think when I eventually move into a larger place, I'll get an actual iMac for editing and continue to use the Air for recording in a booth. It's small, light, and practically silent (I haven't heard it make any noise). With a good WiFi network, you an wirelessly Air Drop files back and forth effortlessly between the two machines.

The extra screen real estate on a desktop iMac, along with a real mouse would make editing a lot easier. My father just retired from a career in journalism and bought one, he loves it. He's an amateur photographer and desktop publisher. For him, nearly all the built-in Apple programs do everything he needs. At 70, it also is easy to use and "just worked" out of the box. That's important, I can't drive 45 minutes every other day to fix something for him!

Dave,

I'm still using an early 2008 Macbook. I record on it using Twisted Wave. For editing, I recently added a 27" monitor, the Apple Wireless Keyboard and an Apple Magic Mouse. Works great and no need to add a second computer. I hope to replace the old Macbook later this year (I'd like to get a Macbook Air for the lighter weight), but it's running fine.
