I decided to swap the hard drive with an SSD. I had no idea it was that easy on this generation of Macbooks. I was done in less than 10 minutes, and only out $99. Even at that price, $20 was for a stupid torx screwdriver set I had to buy.

Now, as for my problem, no idea yet if that was really the cause. At George's suggestion I emailed Thomas at Twisted Wave and he said "I doubt a failing hard drive would cause this". He thinks its just a function of the interface. We'll see I guess.

At any rate, I confirmed the drive was about to go. When I ran the Clone process to move everything to the new drive there were a ton of errors reported, including many in my recordings. I think the drive was about to completely give up the ghost, so it seems I did the swap just in the nick of time.

I think, more than likely this was the cause of my errors in Audacity. Probably Twisted Wave too, in spite of what Thomas thinks.

So, I'm glad for the suggestions to replace the hard drive. Computer is running much, much better overall.

Thanks again everybody.

Paul

Just wanted to post an update on this issue I've been having. I was corresponding with Thomas at Twisted Wave and he confirmed its a bit of a known issue with the program. I have since confirmed with others that it doesn't happen in all cases, even with the same interface. Perhaps it's limited to certain OS versions? I'm on Lion, for instance,

Anyway, here is the response from Thomas if you are interested .

What that means is, as I suspected, when TwistedWave starts the audio
engine, it takes a second or two for the AG03 to settle down and be
ready to record correctly.

TwistedWave stops the audio engine when it is not playing or
recording, because I saw no point in keeping it running, saving
battery if you are working on a laptop.

When you play the silence in loop, it prevents the audio engine from
stopping, and you don't have to wait for two seconds before you start
recording. I now understand some audio interfaces prefer to keep
running, and I will probably have to add an option to have TwistedWave
keep it running. In the meantime, looping a second of silence should
work. I am sorry for the inconvenience.

I have the feeling I walked into the middle of a conversation and can't grasp the context. If I wanted to play with this concept, how do I "loop a second of silence"?

Is that something only TwistedWave can do, or can I do it in some other DAW as well?

Either record a second of room tone, or else use the drop down feature from "Effects" and "insert silence" Then use the playback menu option "Loop Playback".

Then let that file play in the background on loop while recording in a new file.

This was a workaround suggested by Thomas. I can confirm it does solve the problem, but to me it's more effort than is worth it. I'm just forging ahead, but knowing that in my case I need to give TW 2-3 seconds before I start speaking.

As I said to Thomas, I started in this biz with tape and film, so I'm treating this as waiting for "speed" on analog recordings of yore.
