|
|
I have an Avid Mbox 3 Pro. It has served me well and am not in the market for anything different. HOWEVER, I need redundancy in case it should fail and apparently Avid is out of the hardware interface business. When I bought it, it was about $700. I can get a new one now as a backup for $299.
I use a Martech Preamp with a line in and don’t use the Avid pre’s, but they are good and they are there should my pre go down. And I have a set of powered KRK’s running out of it. It’s a clean sounding unit and It serves my needs well.
But before I pop for a new one, I realize it is about 6 or 7 year old technology and want to know of other options I might want to use when the Avid gives it up. I use Pro Tools 11, so it can be used with any interface, but I would like the ease of basically plug and play if it goes down, so I can get back up working again quickly. So I need the same features I’m using now. Line in, powered speakers and sub out, with a Firewire or similar input.
Opinions on which way I should jump for a backup interface that will probably someday become the everyday user?
As always, thanks for your help and knowledge! _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Rick,
Like you, I am a fan of redundancy. If you can find a duplicate, new, for less than half of the original cost that seems like a "no brainer" to me. Especially because if something does go wrong with your existing interface, it is literally plug and play to replace.
I also don't think technology in regard to these kinds of things is marching all that quickly. It's a quality piece of kit. Buy the duplicate and be done with it. (At that price, maybe get 2 of them?) _________________ Be well,

And after Bob wrote what he wrote, I did my research and after reading many A/B’s found that the Mbox 3 Pro is at the top of the game when it comes to converters, which is what I mostly need it for. The pre’s, which are only a backup to me, are as good as any that are incorporated into a converter as well, and from personal use, every day over the last five years, I know that it’s a pretty solid, versatile box, so I took Mr. Souer’s advice. B&H Photo even beat eBay. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/734649-REG/Avid_9900_53111_00_Mbox_3_Pro_High_Definition.html
It will be here Friday.

You didn't say if you are Mac or Pc, but Apple continues to singlehandedly render entire lines of audio interfaces obsolete with each new OS.. the Mbox 2 series, as well as the original 002 and the Apogee Duet as well are kaput with the newest OS, and I think at some point the Mbox 3's will follow, if in fact you are upgrading the OS.. _________________ Lee Kanne

PC, fighting Windows attempts to upgrade me every day from 7 to 10.
You know that thing where a tech says, 'Would you mind if I take control of your computer so I can fix it?' I feel like asking Microsoft if they mind if I take control of my computer so I can keep it the way it is. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Simply googling something like 'permanently stop win7 to win10 update nag' will provide you with a myriad of options to solve this issue _________________ If attacked by a mob of clowns go for the juggler.
