I plan to have my standing desk set up before too much longer. But, because of a bad hip, I've been advised that standing all the time won't be a good idea. So I'm looking into drafting chairs.
Does anyone use one? Any recommendations/things to consider?
Thanks! _________________ Mike

I can offer some advice, as I've been shopping these myself for the same reason.
What I can tell you is to be aware that the feet on most of these are huge! That is to say they take up a large surface area on the floor.
In my 3.7x4.2 booth that is a big issue. I can't seem to find one that will fit, and allow me to still have the computer in front of me on the booth.
I'm still on the lookout for one with a tight leg pattern. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

Consider a bar stool with a back. Because so many kitchens are built today with a counter in the middle and people visit with the cook, or maybe the meal is served at the island in the kitchen, there are some very comfortable and very stylish bars-tools in the furniture stores. And now economy versions are showing up at Walmart and Big Lots!
Office chairs and architects stools have a tendency after they are broken in to develop nasty little squeaks and sounds that are kinfolk to bodily functions.
An occasional squirt of oil will quiet most of them... but not all of them. (Chair squeaks, but not bodily functions. ) |

Skip the barstools. Most are not height adjustable, which is key.
Secondly, many are downright cheap, and will not hold up to day to day use without telltale squeaks and creaks. Not to mention comfort.
Don't skimp. Even if you tend toward cheap yourself. Your butt...and your back, will thank you. _________________ Don Brookshire

+1 for the Mobis. One of the startups I work with has some of these. Like. _________________ Don Brookshire

Wow! Great stuff, guys!
Will have to show these to the physical therapist and see what he says.
Many thanks! _________________ Mike

I actually bought and returned this from Amazon. This is precisely what I was talking about. The legs are HUGE on this one. It was like putting a giant octopus on the floor of my booth. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

I have a standing workstation as well. 42” high. I also have a drafting stool. I looked into the type that Doug mentioned, but you can never really get off your feet. The chair in the picture is what I chose. When I’m going back and forth into the studio or just doing work where I want to stand, I slide it out of the way. But when I want to sit, it’s perfect. Its adjustable height fits perfectly and the foot rest allows me to take the weight off and have my feet supported. Granted, the footprint is big, but when you’re elevated above normal sitting position, that’s a lot of leverage to support, so it’s needed.
I got it about three years ago, I use it every day and it’s held up well. I tried to find my receipt to let you know where I got it and couldn’t do it. However I just researched drafting chairs, found one with a lot of recommendations and got it. Haven’t been disappointed in the purchase.

The picture shows up on my screen.
I'm sure the reason you don't see it..... is that you are sitting in the wrong kind of chair. |
