Can I hijack a sec and ask, Is meeting people at a conference (or some other gathering) still a viable form of networking? ?

Go to a conference of business people (not VO). As much as I like hanging out here, I don't expect to get business from it. I don't expect any of you to refer business to me (but I'd be fine if you did).

In person networking is best done with the people who do business in the market in which you want to work. If you nail the car commercial market, go to the auto show. If your niche is eLearning, join the local chamber of commerce, or professional trade organizations.

Sometimes you can't just "join". For instance if you do a commercial for a plumber, you can't just go join the local steamfitter's union. Having said that, there are ways. As an insurance agent I specialized in long term care insurance. You have to be over 50 to even be considered by most companies. So what I did was join the board of the local Alzheimer's Association chapter. I then became a trusted referral to the members of that group. Later working for a local sports team, I volunteered for several youth sports organizations, in order to get their participants to buy tickets to games.

You just need to find a way to relate to the groups to which you want to sell your services.

You are doing it right if you find yourself in a room and there ARE NOT any other VO people there Smile
