It's about time to upgrade my Mac, and I was considering a Mac Mini due largely to its virtual silence. However, several folks whose opinion I trust have suggested an iMac, as they're much more bang for the buck. They also state that the iMac is virtually silent, (unless the optical drive is doing its thing).
So I'm wondering if anyone here can vouch for the silent factor with regard to the newest iMac. I'm leaning toward the 20" model. I'll also check them out up close and personal at an Apple Store, but in that environment, it may be hard to actually judge.
Thanks for any thoughts. |

I don't know what the most up-to-date models are like. I could never record with the iMac I have--it's noisy as hell! but it's not a dual-core
to test:
Make it look at an option-heavy website like Orbitz or Travelocity with a million flight choices on the screen. My processor nearly pins whne I go to one of those sites.
OR a YouTube Video. Heavy processor draw.
All the best! _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Hey Don,
I believe there a few folks here that have the new iMac (dual core). Until they weigh in I'll toss in my experience. I got a iMac 20" dual core back in March and it is almost totally silent...very impressive!

FYI: If you have an Apple store nearby you can test drive any number of audio a s...and talk with the audio expert on staff.
P.S. I also visited the sites DB mentioned just to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. Nere a hiccup! _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

I have the 17 which I use for internet & graphics and stuff.
It's extremely quiet. Even in mid-summer with temperatures up to the mid 30's. I did a firmware update a while back and part of the updating process involved running the fans at maximum. Boy, was I suprised. Those fans are noisy! But that's the only time I've ever heard them! Even the drives are barely noticable in a normal environment.

Just a little update for those curious.
Well, I ventured into the Apple Store on Black Friday and took advantage of an additional $101 off, plus I squeezed them for another $50 off and walked out with a brand spankin' new 20" Core 2 Duo iMac. I might add, an incredibly quiet iMac. As in, virtually silent. As in, barely even moves the meters with the mic open and me not yapping.
So I blown my "work" budget for the foreseeable future. But now I have to stop looking and get booking. |
