It's the old version of a Senheiser MD421II...used them for broadcast and radio prod for years, and the price was right. Free!
Pros/cons from the more experienced on this critter? |

Mics are like noses...everyone has one...but each one works a little differently.
Never-the-less, back in my radio days, we also used 421's both on-air and for production. I spent years behind them and learned how to work them quite effectively... and if I had the opportunity to get one today (especially free) I would use it, feel right at home... and apologise to no one for doing so!

Ahhh...the MD421. I used those mics for many years and still do when I pull an occassional airshift at a local station I do some part-time fill-in for. It's a workhorse alright and all the stations in this area use 'em.
I wouldn't mind having a 421 in my box to use from time to time |

The MD421II was pretty ubiquitous in TV production house voice over booths for a long time around here. They never knocked me out, but at the price point of free... they can't be beat.
By the way, a TV engineer once told me with a straight face that audio was a black art. |

I use one in the audio booth at my station and an NTK at home.
Gets the job done and it doesn't get much better when it's free.

Exact sentiments as Chris and Tom. Used them forever and they do the job, But if I had to buy a mic, I don't think it would be that one.
FREE is a good thing, however. _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

They are bullet proof. There's always a use for a good quality mic.
..oh and the price-point thing. One mic's locker can never be too full right? _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Quoting myself? Is that legal in this state?
Anyway, join me in the WayBack machine as we go back in time to the first UHF station in San Jose, CA. This would have been sometime in the 60's. Anyway, they were hours away from their inaugural sign on when one of the engineers said, "A microphone! We'll need a microphone!" |

On the Sennheiser web site the 421 is listed as an instrument mic. Of course, I believe they see the vocal category as "live concert performance."
The more mics the better, I say!
You made me think about the different mics I've used on the air. Electrovoice 635, Electrovoice RE20, RCA 77D, Shure SM5B, Shure SM7, Sennheiser 441. I did use the Sennheiser 421 when all of our radio stations were bought and we moved in with 6 others. (Before my 401K rolled over more times than Heidi Fliess) They had them in their production rooms and on the air in four stations. I'm showing my age, but when I see the 421 I can't help but think of the game show "Hollywood Squares."
I appreciate every mic I have especially now that I've been recording a band here (Ages 18- 20). Sound familiar, Deirdre? I have to say that the Studio Projects C1 into a Symetrix 528 processor delivers a beautiful vocal.
Enjoy all of your mics! |

Just so happens that I used one for the first time in a studio the other day. Never got to hear it though.
I heard that Nasa puts a whole bunch of these on the launch tower to record the shuttle going up. The only problem is they literally get fried each time and have to be replaced.

With NASA burning mics, that should keep the company making them for a while. Perhaps they should change their name to "Singe-heisser?" |
