I've been EXTREMELY lucky to live where, 95% of the time, it's very quiet. So quiet that I don't have a booth. A couple of ClearSonic Sorber panels and some strategically-placed theatrical drape, in conjunction with the highly-directional Sennheiser 416, have yielded surprisingly good results.
Noise that does create occasional problems includes: the single-prop planes flying in and out of the municipal airport less than two miles away (which increases slightly during the summer, when close proximity to popular beach areas bring a few more planes lazily droning around towing the bar ad banners); the ±weekly visits by the grass-mowing, leaf-blowing and weed-whacking landscrapers; occasional nearby road construction; the less frequent drills and exercises carried out by the nearby military base (which sometimes includes detonations of who-knows-what producing audible low-frequency concussions that shake the place and rattle the windows); and the even more rare but still problematic high winds. Oh, even a moderate rain will cause noise problems. Most of the time I can work around these things for unsupervised recording. But booking and doing ISDN sessions is playing Russian Roulette.
But having to work around can get tiresome and playing Russian Roulette can be very stressful.
Because I rent this space, I would need a booth that would be easy to assemble... and disassemble, if need be. Which is why StudioBricks comes to mind. I seem to recall videos made by George, in which he put together a StudioBricks booth.
Does anyone have any first-hand experience with StudioBricks to share?
Many thanks. _________________ Mike

following with interest as I'm in the exact same boat. Great sound currently, with a similar setup by drumperfect, but often interrupted by helicopters, lawn mowers and family. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

I think our own Adam Verner uses a SB booth and he does audiobooks so that would be a good test of whether it is consistently quiet enough for him or if he has to pause from time to time. |

Jason, is your Whisper Room single or double walled?
I think I read a comment by George that said while Studio bricks was great, it still didn't match a double walled Whisper room for isolation _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

They sure look pretty. Some of the coolest/sleekest/sexiest booths I've seen.
I like the orange color for some reason. Dunno why?! _________________ "The wise ones fashioned speech with their thought, sifting it as grain is sifted through a sieve." - Buddha

I actually built my booth. None of the prefab options offered enough soundproofing for the money. |

I have the double-walled Whisper Room.
In eight years, I have never had outside noise ruin an audition take or interrupt a session, and I have always lived in residential neighborhoods with all the usual accompanying sources of outside noise. And all of my sessions take place during daytime business hours, not late at night. |

The triple-wall StudioBricks Pro is on-par with WR Enhanced (double wall). Without a lot of low-frequency data below 120hz, can't say who wins "in the basement", but they are comparable. Whether the SB ventilation is adequate is another story, but upgrades are available (albeit costly). Also, always go rectangle over square, as Brian said. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I may ask Steven if I can pay him a visit and check out his booth and compare it to my homemade one. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

What about DISassembling a StudioBricks booth... to move and reassemble it elsewhere (oh, I can't stand to think of that possibility)? _________________ Mike

Would love it if someone who has the knowledge base to compare the specs or direct experience could tell me if the double wall is adequate for keeping out your average suburban neighborhood noise or if the triple wall would be needed. |

There is no real "average" suburban noise-floor, because every home is built differently and located at different proximities to streets/intersections/airports/NASCAR tracks.
Setup your mic at location, record samples of voice and RT at a few different times of day, that will create some data points from which to make an educated recommendation. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
