I agree with the local angle. last station I worked at we killed the competition, we had the largest full time radio news staff in the state and covered a boatload of tiny town meetings, but that is what people wanted. the air personalities were local and talked about local issues in between the lame music they played. the founders of the station sold out to a corporation who now from 7-12 has that smarmy d-lady, they still have a morning show, but more smarm than local content, and the news department, well I think its completely gone, maybe one or two people and then inserts from corp, nothing really local at all.
it was a small station, small ADI but it had the audience, now its just a small white building with a tall tower next to it. gone are the days when we would launch a radiothon and get donations of goods that requried 26 trucks to haul to those in need.
it's a shame really. |

Every once in a while, I go to my bookmarks and revisit some old familiar voices from the past. http://www.wrko.org/wrko_misc/airchecks.htm. Okay, maybe you need to have grown up in Massachusetts to appreciate some of them, but I'm sure you all have favorites you listened to growing up wherever you were. |

Don,
Sadly WRKO has been changing rapidly of late. The latest casualty was the entire full-time news staff. That will all be outsourced now.
It's the realities of publicly traded broadcasting companys I know but still....I also miss the radio of years ago. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Yeah--they killed the news staff and now the Metro guys are doing their news.
At Metro, they'll add on duties, but not up your pay. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Once upon a time, radio stations were owned, operated and staffed by people who loved radio. Then it was invaded by those who did not love it, who just wanted to rake off all the money they could this quarter and let next quarter take care of itself. If they could take a perennial loser and pump up the audience, they could sell it at a tidy profit. But, these were people having no ties to the community and no love for the business. They've done their best to kill it. Danged near succeeded too.
Every city in the country once had it's own unique personality and the local radio stations reflected that personality. It was fun to listen to the differences - the variety was a result of local creativity and the ability of local talent to perform, to have fun on the air instead of being stifled and homogenized to the point of utter, bland, repetitive sameness. Am I cruising Woodward Avenue in the Motor City or basking on the beach at Fort Meyers? Well, it's for sure, you can't tell by listening to the radio. |

Yep. McRadio. It's a cryin' shame.
What a fun, fun business it used to be.

Yup, deregulation in the mid 80's turned radio from broadcasting into the real estate industry. That, and the Arizona Waiver, which allowed owners to move towers. Lot's of smaller markets lost their local outlets. |
