I'm rather new to the VO business, and was wondering how you go about finding a quality VO studio to rent time in....I have done some looking around both web and other methods, and have not been so lucky? Any suggestions? Also, what kind of money should I expect to shell out for a demo?

Remember, I'm a newbie, so be gentle...

Thanks!

OK... gentle it shall be. Unless you are ready to produce a demo to send out, I don't see the need for a studio. (Granted I may be reading something into your note that isn't there).

But I assume as a newbee that's not the purpose for finding a studio (?) That would be very expensive practice. Soooo.... if practice is the objective why not plug in a mic into your computer and have at it. Never mind the quality... that can come later when your budget allows.

I would be surprised to learn that very many (if in fact any) of the people on this board rent a studio for any reason.

As for the cost of a demo there's no set answer. I've known people to pay as little as $300 and as much as $3000. It just depends on what you really need to get done (time wise) and how much coaching/direction (if any is involved).

All the best and welcome to the VO-BB!

Dave

Welcome to the VO-BB. First... some questions.
What qualifications do you have, that will convince the owner of the studio to let you in? Believe me... he would love to take your money, but in the mean time, he has 15 other qualified clients... with cash in hand... to use the booth. Other than the wonder and awe of the VO business... what steps have you taken so far? Have you had any exposure to VO?... any training?... what kind of home computer set-up do you have for recording? I'm not trying to discourage you, I just want to be sure the horse is in front of the cart.

You've come to the right place for answers to VO questions.

From the two responses to your original post, I think it is clear that we don't know why you want to rent the studio...please elaborate on why you are asking.

Is it to produce a demo?
Is it to service potential clients?

To answer the questions...

1) I have a bit of experience doing local DJ work (not on the air, but for a party DJ).

2) My home set-up will not allow much quality for a demo at all...and I want the quality to be equal if not better than the promotional CD's we send out as a DJ company.

3) I know some of the local radio folks, and can get access, but that's generally after hours, and I'm on my own. That's how we produce the demos for music. Not the same as voice, as there is no "acting" per se, so I would be looking for direction too...

So, the answer really is "Yes" to both questions.

If my answers don't make sense, let me know.

Thanks for the help, and I'll be sure to do some more searching before I do anything. I don't look to make this a replacement for my regular job, but also do not want to look like a total hack while doing it.

Ok... You've had experience as a party DJ. That means you are somewhat familiar with a mic and possibly a mixer. You didn't say whether you have had any "professional" VO training. There are classes that can be taken on-line... or you can buy books that will give the basics about what is expected of a Voice actor.

There seems to be quite a bit going on in the Seattle area.
This website http://seattleactingschool.com/voiceover.html
doesn't handle VO in the Seattle area anymore, but they do have a nice listing of VO related information on the right side of the page...
Seattle Voice Over Classes
Seattle Duplication Services
Seattle Recording Studios

There is also a detailed listing of Seattle area recording studios at
http://www.musicprep.com/seattle/

I hope that helps answer some of the questions you may have about studios in your area. If you hang out enough at VO-BB, you may even find a lot more answers. Good luck.

Bailey,

Thanks for the web lookups....I think I've seen one of these site before...

I've never had any fomal VO training. I've only ever been told that I should do commercials...and I do character voices, and a few impressions. People have also told me that I should do stand-up comedy, but I'm just not that funny...or original. Wink

I'll be lurking on this board looking for other insights, and I'll let everyone know how I do.

Thanks again!
Dan
