Just curious how many of you actually find yourself frequently changing microphones for different styles/genres.
I recently added a 416 and I find that I love it. Still in the honeymoon phase to some extent but it sounds much nicer than my previous mic, AKGC214. I originally entertained the idea of buying another LDC like a tlm103 but I'm afraid that I'll just end up using one of them all the time and have a grand sitting in a box.
Thoughts and experiences?
Thanks

I have a CAD E100S and a Sennheiser 416 on two separate Luxo scissor arm stands on either side of my computer and can just choose Mic 1 or 2 in my software. I usually know in advance if I want the high clarity of the CAD or the more forward sound of the shotgun, but sometimes if I'm not sure I'll record through both simultaneously and then review the samples and choose one to finish the job. To be honest, the difference between the two is slim, but it gives me something to "worry" about.

HAHA, this is exactly what i'm currently "worried about". That it would just be something to clog up my perfectionist brainway in the form of worry.
thanks for weighing in. I like the idea o just having them both set up. I could go for that. |

I'm a big believer in having both a shotgun and a large diaphragm condenser, but then again I am also somewhat of a gearhead. |

Elwood and me and Chuck Davis think along the same lines and have a shotgun and large diaphragm. I actually have 2 large diaphragms. Langevin CR3A (FET, my current GoTo mic) and Rode NTK Tube.

I have a shotgun (AT875r) and a Shure SM7B. Since I mainly record long form stuff (audiobooks), the SM7B gets most of my work. However, I long to replace the AT875r with a 416. |

In Portgordon Studio South I have a Neumann U87ai and in Portgordon Studio North I have a Neumann U87 so I simply switch studios for that aged almost identical sound. |

Two mics on scissor booms as well. My pre-amp is mono, so I use the Radial Engineering "Gold Digger", which allows me to use the mono Avalon M5 on both mics – at the push of one button I can be on the other. Most all work is done on the 416, but my Michael Joly Mod NT1-A comes in when I'm doing things that are a bit more high energy. I find the way it handles my voice on higher energy reads is much more appealing and it retains the tighter lows. _________________ Brian Haymond

I have two in the booth as well. The 416 does most of the work, and the second mic switches between a CAD e100s and a modified V69me tubey thing. What's sitting on the other stand is usually decided by irrelevant or capricious reasons.
The biggest issue is switching between the 416 and the whatever LDC... I hate the whole plugging/unplugging thing... it weakens cables and can can cause all sorts of problems... and I like to go, "Oh, I wonder what that will sound like on the other mic?" and just hit a button rather than faffing about. I invested in probably the single most over-priced but wonderfully useful chuck of hardware to do the switching... the Radial Gold Digger mic switch... four ports and all level trimming and phantom power needs cater for.

Well, there's that Gold Digger. You are right, that price is hefty, but it truly is a quality piece of gear. _________________ Brian Haymond

I am also in the 416/LDC camp (U87ai), and also because I Just Like It. Ostensibly it's because I use the 416 for certain things, but in fact I end up switching for feel, or because I'm mad at one of the mics, or because I'm bored. (I find that switching can enliven a dull performance as the "new" sound snaps me out of a rut--or at least seems to.) A very few clients have asked for one or the other (in which case it's usually the U87 on account of it being the U87).
I use the Triad Orbit fantastical dual-boom--one of the coolest things like, since ever. _________________ Jack Daniel

The manufacturer of the Gold Digger seems to have named the device after himself. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Having a Gold Digger in the booth doesn't sound too bad, actually |
