VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

Mixed feelings about awards programs. I saw Phillips UK award and knowing his body and quality of work, I'm happy for him.

There's another awards program, US based, gearing up for later this year... And nominees are recently announced. I see a lot of names I know, some I feel are qualified and others not... And I feel good AND bad about it all. In one of my older bios, I had to fill in if I had received awards... I filled in that 'although I've won 'miss congeniality' at a weekend conference once, I hadn't won other professional awards. And, that my work is my reward." This leaves a small, but at this time of year noticeable, lingering sense of lack of accomplishment.

Work and the life around it that I've created is still my reward. I really believe that! My new life is my prize; changing my life at the turn of the century and leaving a corporate life behind. But seeing the flurry of congrats and nominations listed, the 'aww shucks' which seems like bs, and the rest swirling in this moment on social media, I do get a slightly bitter taste about the value of such rewards, and wonder if I'm being unfair. I feel left out of a party I'm not even sure I want to be invited to!!

And I don't have time to nominate myself for awards nor do I want to spend the money to do so. Part of my 'ick' about it all is paying entrance fees to enter a nomination... I personally know one Oscar winner, and another who was nominated 3 times. They didn't pay entrance fees. I don't want to either.

But it sure would be nice, admittedly, to have peer or "industry" recognition, in addition to this great life I've created.

Anyone else have any awards blues?! cool

Awards are nifty, but only if truly earned, not bought and paid for, as in Emmys and Oscars to be specific, and the American competition you mention in a roundabout way.

The real awards for us are the emails hiring us, the phone patch sessions, the ISDN sessions, the growing number of paychecks and direct deposits from the other side of the globe. I like getting bigger and better, more noticeable gigs. I like to brag (just a little) here and there. I added the "Recent Projects" section so all of us can see what our colleagues are up to, and also give us a chance to get an "attagirl" or some such.

"Hey, I heard you on the TV last night" is a pretty nice award all by itself.

My VOX Award was part of a bigger, fun event and in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter in the least. Many of the people who attended were younger than my favourite pair of shoes so simply shrugged "give the old fart some recognition before he dies" convinced I would not make it through the night.

The greatest award in life is life itself everything else can be bought with a major credit card.

This topic returns every year at this time. I have lots of friends who've been nominated...and congratulations to them all.
Personally though, I just can't get all that interested in a contest where I have to pay to submit for possible nomination and, if selected, pay to attend the awards gala. Of course, proceeds do go to charity...but still....
All of this so that you can receive an attaboy for the best demo or what have you...and pay for a trophy that will collect dust in the studio where no one will see it anyway.

I am not trying to undermine those like Anthony and Philip who actually accomplished something worthy of recognition, but I think it is a misnomer to call something "an award" where you pay a fee to nominate yourself and must pay to attend the award gala. I think that is like buying a lottery ticket for a chance to claim you are somehow special and can put it on your resume without really earning it.

Just another method of separating you from your money. No thanks.

I'll go out on a limb here and add my two cents. After watching from the sidelines for a few years, I made a business decision earlier this year to submit one of the local commercials I voiced. For me, a $150 entry fee was worth the risk to experiment and see if a nomination could generate some good marketing buzz for me and my business, as well as make some connections with people that could be helpful to know. I suffer no delusions that being nominated for a local TV commercial VO means much of anything in regards to my talent or success, but it's a fun marketing opportunity, and I really don't see any downside. That's my take!
