What the scammers try to do is filter out people who aren’t gullible enough to fall for it.

Fascinating. Thanks for this, Doug! In an odd way it is reassuring.

The 99% of people who know better will put them straight into the trash. The remaining 1% — the easily deceived — are more likely to be reeled in.

But now that I think about it... Although it makes sense that weeding out the non-susceptible might reduce the likelihood that such folk will "do something about it" and through reporting endanger the scammer, I'm not sure I see why the remaining 1% would then become more likely to engage. Is the assumption that the poor language is received more favorably than proper language by the less intelligent? Because the lack of "smart" people in the mix cannot magically affect the readings of the 1%. Sending out a bajillion emails is effectively cost-free... Perhaps I'm missing something obvious (feel free to send me poorly worded scam emails if so Smile...

Perhaps I need to read the study.

Basically, scammers want to reduce the rate of false-positives to their scams and by using broken English, they lower the number of readers who will take their email seriously to only the most gullible email users.

The broken English is used as a *pre-qualifier*, to help ensure that the ONLY people who respond to the scammers' initial mass mailings (and therefore have to be brought along individually during the later stages) are absolutely the most gullible, ignorant, susceptible, suckers they can find.

And it's typically a group not just one scammer.

Thanks Doug. That makes sense--I was getting hung up on the idea that somehow the response of Nonsuckers affected that of Suckers, which your gloss confirms is not the case. I do appreciate your patience, and (unfortunately) the wiles of the scamming community Smile

Imagine how much more usefully such intelligence could be employed in non-exploitative endeavors... You know, like regular marketing, instead of hate-marketing. It's one thing to beat someone in a game; but to hurt them when they didn't even know they were playing is beyond lame.
