I am a complete neophyte to all of this stuff but have learned a lot in the last few weeks. I am doing instructional videos on software used for mapping.
I am testing two microphones and the passage was recorded into an Apollo Twin Duo into Protools using separate channels. I did minimal noise reduction and no other processing or plug-ins. Please take a listen and give be some feedback one which mic. you prefer. I will post the brands after a couple of days. Thanks in advance

Both mics sounded equal to me in overall quality (basically decent) however the second mic, or its positioning, allowed less room reflection to get into your audio giving it a better result.
However, both mics gave you a distinct southern drawl...Texas?

Now that is funny! Did you happen to listen to the clip? I would love some more feedback. |

I would give Mic 2 the slight edge in preference |

Honestly it is tough to tell because the room sounds so bad. I would say, skip trying to pick a mic until you do something about the space. If you really can't make any room changes, maybe a dynamic would be a better choice (maybe a Heil PR40). |

+1 to what Jason wrote.
A Shure SM7B (A dynamic mic) bailed me out of a bad situation when my room was not well treated.
My suggestions:
1. Get you room ready
2. Then choose your mic
3. Invest in a good coach
Of the 2 mics we have to choose from "B" sounds better to my ears. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Yep.
Mic B gets my vote.
A bit smoother...less "harsh" to my ears.
Also...were you using the native preamp on the Apollo Twin Duo or one of the Unison emulations?
Apollo and Protools.
That's some mighty strong tools for a "neophyte."

I'm not liking the S sounds from mic B. Otherwise, I agree with what others have said about room and background noise. _________________ www.TonerVoice.com |

Thanks for all the responses. Solved most of the noise issue by moving my computer under the desk. Reducing the gain helped a bunch as well. I had to run gain pretty high to get any volume out of my RE 20. The mics I tested do not need that much gain. I am not planning a professional career. I am doing videos, so I don't have to answer the same client questions over and over.
Mic A: Neumann TLM 103
Mic B: Sennheiser MKH 416 |
