Had a bit of a shock today. I've been on this forum for a couple of years now, and have had the privilege of reading some great advice from the very sage talent, Bob Bergen. Now, perhaps based on the fact that he voices Porky Pig, and due to his sagely sageness, I had a bit of a Sir Alec Guiness image of him in my head. Imagine my surprise when I happened to be cruising the roster of my agent (appearance agent. Bob and I are alas, not on the same talent roster) and saw a picture of Bob Bergen himself. A definitively younger, handsome man stared back at me, and I had to click on the listing and make sure it was correct.
It's funny how we create realities in our minds isn't it? Now, I will do my best to continue to glean from his words of wisdom...but the fact that he's no Obi Wan...well, it was a bit disconcerting.

That he is Obi Wan, and thats the image he wants you to see.

One of the reasons I always tell people to keep their images off their vo marketing, especially when they are trying to establish their career! You open up the chance buyers will judge your voice by your look and pass on listening.
....as for my youthful appearance, got a feeling they are using a very old headshot. I'm no Alec Guinness, but I'm also a tad older than that pic. I also got into this wacky biz when I was pretty young. Took my first vo class at 14 and signed with my first agent at 18. Been doing Porky for 27 years. In all honesty, I'm just your average middle aged vo dude now. No Obi Wan. Though I have voiced Luke Skywalker!!!  |
