Ian, there are no electronics in headphones that would generate any sound, including a buzz. Like loudspeakers, they simply convert electronic signals to sound.
I'm sure, if you were to plug another set of headphones into the same jack that they, too, will have the buzz, meaning there is likely something in the device your cans are plugged into (prior to the headphone jack) that is creating the buzz. _________________ Mike

CHECK THEM... I was advised of the following about similar sounds in my Beyer D7T-990's and while BEYERs are made differently from the classic SHUREs, it is not uncommon for small pieces of hair to randomly work their way through whatever protective cover is there and touch the diaphragm.... the resulting buzz sounds like a blown driver... _________________ SoundscenesDC, main talent and production offices just 385k km up the gravity well in LuNoHoCo Center, old satellite studios still bookable at the future site of Johnson City! |

also... 'buzz in the cans' means:
'any sound fed to them has an added fuzzy rattly character"
or
"when NO ACTIVE SOUND is fed to them, there is a constant buzzing sound heard"
former means either something mechanical is awry with the driver in question
(swap headphones and see if it goes away...it should)
or something electronic is wrong with that headphone channel.
(swap headphones and see if it goes away...it should NOT)
latter means something electronic in the system is awry and creating a constant buzz... _________________ SoundscenesDC, main talent and production offices just 385k km up the gravity well in LuNoHoCo Center, old satellite studios still bookable at the future site of Johnson City! |

Sounds like maybe it's a partial break of the wiring in the plug or the cord leading to the phones. Gently manipulate the cord while listening to something and see if you make the buzz better or worse. Wiggle the plug in its socket too. IF it is wiring and IF you can take apart your phones to get to it without destroying them, a person handy with a soldering iron might be able to fix it. Otherwise it's time to get a new set.
One last oddball thing to check: is your microphone close to a light fixture? Year ago I found that when my mic got close to a light fixture from the ceiling it made an unusual buzz in my headset. I couldn't replicate it with any other combination of equipment, just those two things.
Bon chance,

audible induced electronic Buzz is a bigger annoyance than ever since EVERYTHING radiates RF (radio frequency) noise now... phones, lightbulbs, anything with a chip in it. Microphones can receive this noise and send it down the wire as buzzing noise.
I first hit on this back when we had pagers... in a session there was this damned odd BRRRZZZZZTTTTT noise in the studio monitors that lasted a second or so and stopped... happened again minutes later... maddening... nobody could track it, nobody wanted to do a take if it was going to mess it up. I noticed someone's pager sitting on the console bridge and thought "hey... those things regularly 'check-in' with their tower every once in a while, right?" ... moved it off the console. Never heard the noise again. It was sending bursts of RF every 10 min or so and that got into the console circuitry.
now EVERYTHING does this. CONSTANT VIGILANCE! _________________ SoundscenesDC, main talent and production offices just 385k km up the gravity well in LuNoHoCo Center, old satellite studios still bookable at the future site of Johnson City! |
