Got an amazing deal on an Apollo Twin Smile

Now I need help with choosing the right plug-ins and finding the right settings.

The API Vision channel strip plug-in is now on sale, $ 179 !

Any suggestions ?

Just had a similar situation and I am now using the Apollo Twin as well.

I highly suggest the SSL 4000 Channel Strip plugin. I think it sounds great, the expander works just as well as my DBX 286a (and I liked that one a lot), but it is pretty resource intensive (not a big deal unless you are using a bunch of plugins for music or something).

I tried all of the channel strips that had a gate or expander and I found that this was the only one I could make work. The Neve 88rs had chatter no matter what settings I used, the Valley People Dyna-mite had the same issue. I briefly tried the API, but I think I was having an issue dialing in the expander on that one too. I would demo them and see which one will fit your needs the best.

Right now everything is on sale (including the SSL plugin that I just paid for GRR). If you can make a decision before June 30th then you can save some dough. I'm guessing they dropped a $25 or $50 off coupon in your account as well so it would be worth choosing and purchasing now.

I use the SSL and the 1176 on my typical VO recording. 1176 is just there to tame rogue peaks. Other than that, I use the expander to drop my noise floor by about 4dB just to keep things nice and clean.

I personally prefer to send tracks mostly raw because I don't always know the context or the music or how frequencies are going to interact. Good clean neutral audio is what I send out, and the Twin kills it at making that happen.

Apollo Twin here as well...

...with the Manley Voxbox, API Vision Channel Strip, Neve 88RS Channel Strip, etc.

However, one that really surprised me was...the UA-610A tube channel strip.

Crank up the input.

It's very basic with NO noise gate/expander and minimal eq.

To my ears...and on my voice...I think it sounds amazing. Laugh

Thanks Ed for that tip about the 610-A.

It did not even enter my mind to check that one out. Will have to play around with it, but it sounds pretty nice Smile

Honestly. I hear what you're saying about "settings" that others are using.

It would be very interesting to see.

There are several "presets" that come with it. Since I am only interested in voice...most are not that useful.

But...I think your best bet is to first read the manual on each plugin you are trying out and then carefully make sure everything is turned "off," then go through each part (particularly the channel strips that have several distinct parts) and see what sounds good to your ears.

Granted...the manuals could be a bit more helpful...but by simply understanding the basics you can do a lot. On some of them there is a lot to remember and it might seem very complicated. It's mostly a matter of getting familiar with the interface. Find something you like...and save it with a unique name. Tweek it little more...save it with a slightly different name...etc.

Then, when you inevitable go too far...you can find an earlier version you like better.

I was wrong on the SSL. I thought it was on sale but it was b3cause I already own it and I was logged in. If I put it in my cart it says $149.

I, unfortunately, discovered the same thing.

The current sale is NOT on everything.

However, if history repeats itself, the end-of-year sale in December might very well have that 149 return as a reality for the rest of us.

I like the Manley Voxbox. Once you get it set it requires no additional after the fact compression. The 610 is nice as well.
