I've got a chance to grab an AT 4050 mic. Anyone use one? If so, what's your thoughts? Just curious....

Russ,
I use the AT-4033 and love it. The 4050 is nearly identical, except it has switchable patterns. (The 4033 is a fixed cardioid pattern only.) _________________ Be well,

I use an AT-4040 and have no complaints.
(I also have no idea how it compares to the 4050, however.) |

Dan-O advised me I was being paged
I have the 4033 like Bob. It is a nice mic for all around purposes...VO, singing, instruments etc. Since I use a 416 more now, I tend to have to eq any tracks recorded with the 4033. Mine is a tad on the muddy side in my opinion.
I have never recorded with a 4050. Sorry Russ. _________________ Ben

I own an AT-4050, and used to use it as my main mic. I bought a Rode NTK as a secondary mic, and liked it so much that it's now #1, with the 4050 in the #2 role (visitors).
The 4050 is a good, accurate mic, that compares very favorably to more expensive mics.
The NTK a few $100 less expensive, but I like that little sizzle on the high end it offers.

Rode NTKs make me sound too sibilant. I use an AT 4040 for auditions at home and I dig it. It took over for an MXL V67 that sounds OK but is a little noisy. Sitting in a box is an AT 2020 that is a great mic for under $100 (it actually came as a freebee with my Mbox).
At the studio, the engineers usually put me in front of a 414 or a U87. |
