I know that one person’s opinion will directly contradict another person’s opinion, but I’m putting this out there anyway, just to get a general consensus. It’s time for a demo update. Does this have a good feel or not? That’s all I want to know. Does it keep you from front to back and you end up saying, ‘Yeah, he’s ok...’
I think my few VO friends are tired of me asking for opinions, so I'm putting it here where I won’t be offended if you tell me to just take a hike, instead of like a good friend telling me to take a hike.
Here’s the updated commercial demo... Hit or Miss?

Some might say put something very natural like the "sundown" clip up front but I'm not some. I think this'll git you a bit of work, so I'd run with it.
Super nit picky, but I'd like to hear a tiny bit of space between the clips. They slam right into each other. I mean keep the background music and such but give the brain a moment to savor each clip.
That is all.

GREAT!!!!!!
And this is why asking for demo critiques can drive you nuts. If you ask 20 different people you get 20 different ways to make it better.
What I actually love about it is the editing! Great contrasting spots/intents/energies next to each other with no space/fading/music between. Keeps the demo moving and leaves the listener asking for more. |

Well, dang, that's good stuff. Keeps churning the rich warm sound right to where it needs to be.

Thanks for the input. I know that each of you are pro’s and I value your opinion.
To Bruce... My goal IS to hit them over the head. No stops to let them have a reason to go somewhere else.
To Bob... It was really nice to see your positive comments on the editing. When making a demo I listen to a lot of clips of projects I’ve done. My goal is having a lot of different ranges and dynamics that can blend together for a seamless piece. To have you affirm that was all I needed.
And thanks to Philip and Connie for your positive comments as well! _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

I see I am late to this party, but I really like it. Now reading the comments, I agree that it's classic YOU, Rick! And I love the edits.
It's funny, I don't necessarily like that kind of edit when I'm watching TV or movie trailers, for a variety of reasons. But for VO, I absolutely do, and seems to me you nailed it. Not a surprise, but regardless -- well done! _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

So if you're interested after all this, a friend of mine suggested I bounce this off my agents. After all, they sell me, so they know what sells. And being in LA, they are in the center of the industry. Why didn't I think of that.
So I did and it was suggested I flip the opening and second clips. The reasoning was that the open kind of hits you over the head and might pigeon hole me into one type of read. I followed that advice and totally agree. I pass that along because it's good advice for those who might be making or updating their demos. This is the intention I'll be sending out...
