I feel your pain, Mike. Going through the same problem myself. Will probably have to "rent" Audition for Mac since I don't have any more installs left on my current CS 6. Looking at Audacity but it just doesn't do what Adobe does and I won't be near as fast on it. Too much work going on and no time to fiddle with software and learn it. My current Mac mini has been solid for 5 years and is just now starting to slow down and wear out but with plenty of use. Was well worth it and less headaches than my PC's. I just hope all audio software companies don't go the "renting" route. I have thought about Pro Tools but it seems like too much and Twisted Wave is only single track. I do a little multi-track production on occasion. So, we'll see what Cyber Monday deals Adobe has if any.

I think I've tried almost every DAW out there because I was looking for the most functional and cost effective solution for the Bee Audio narrator course (that doesn't exist anymore). The three things that I found to be consistently missing from most solutions were Spectral Editing, a good Hard Limiter, and some way to consistently analyze Peak and RMS levels of audio.

If you need a hard limiter there are lots of free solutions for Mac or PC.

As for analyzing audio Twisted Wave (Mac only), SoundForge Pro (Mac or PC now from Magix instead of Sony), Audition handle this with built-in functionality. ProTools does it as well I believe.

And spectral editing is the big one. SoundForge Pro now comes with Izotope RX Elements for spectral editing (though not nearly as efficient as Audition). There is also a Spectral Layers for Spectral Editing (works with Sound Forge) but again, it is not integrated like it is in Audition.

Really it comes down to the questions: What do you really NEED (now and in the future) for your editing. I also use the photo and video tools so the CC subscription is just part of doing business for me, but if you don't NEED what Audition has to offer then there are definitely options.

@Jason Huggins Have you tested the Youlean Loudness meter?
Looking for a large-display RMS/LUFS metering-solution, I recently downloaded the Youlean Loudness plugin. I really like the larger displays, which are much like the Waves' WLM. I'm a Reaper-guy and wanted something less-dizzying than the Schwa AudioStats plug. I have A/B'd the two plugs and they seem pretty spot on. However, I would like to see a side-by-side with WLM, TT's meter, VisLM-H2, and others.

I use TwistedWave for most self-record gigs, auditions and rolling backups for Source-Connect/ISDN sessions.

Pro Tools for phone patch sessions (being able to play takes back to the client) and the odd occasion when I have a client in the studio or am recording other talent. I got Pro Tools and an Apogee Quartet in lieu of a mixer setup for sending everything in and out of the booth.

I must say, I am actually finding some pretty swish advantages with Pro Tools, even for some of the stuff for which I would have said it was overkill. TwistedWave is still my default while I am slow as hummus with Pro Tools...but I'm learning!

Another vote for Twisted Wave.

It has all manner of tools for exporting regions, splitting by markers, etc. Solidly built with a simple interface, but plenty of horsepower under the hood. Great for getting auditions out the door with no fuss and it will handle serious production work.

Pair it with Izotope RX6 and you can cover pretty much any issue you're likely to encounter for VO challenges - their voice declick tool in has been tuned up nicely in the current version. Plus you get the spectral editing tools, etc.

The RX6 tools show up as Effects in the TW menu, so you can invoke them from inside TW, or use it as a standalone repair environment (assuming you get the RX6 Standard as opposed to the Elements suite.)

No punch & roll, but you didn't mention that in your OP. If that's a concern, Ocenaudio will let you do that in a simple/free setup, and Studio One and Reaper both support it natively as well.

As a music composer, I've been a Cubase user for many years (on Pro v10 now). Since I've become super fast on it, there is no reason to switch now that I am doing VO. In addition to the great plug-ins that come with the DAW, I use 3rd party processing from UAD, Waves, iZotope and others. It's a sweet ride!

Been using Pro Tools since the mid 90's. Now on High Sierra and PT 12.
after all this time I know it's ins and outs at the deep layers. No need to rock the boat now.

Latest version of Twisted Wave now has punch and roll, although I haven't downloaded it yet.
