In my effort of ‘Out with the old / In with the new’, I went to New Egg to order a couple of replacement SSD’s. To my utter amazement, I ran into THREE different types, TWO of which I’ve never even heard of.
PCI-E 3.0, M.2 (pronounced M dot 2, in case you’re voicing this post) and SATA 3, which I have and want to do preventative maintenance by replacement.
Any of you familiar with these new guys and if so, are you using them and if so, are they worth it or should I stay with my SATA 3?
I’m replacing my primary boot drive and secondary storage drive. Looking for ‘Knowledge and Wisdom’ here.

PCI-e is the way to go these days. Wicked fast. However....
It's likely that your system board might not support it, since your original configuration was SATA.
Go with what you know. You're looking for dependability, not a boost, right?

| PCIe plugs into a slot in your motherboard, like a graphics card and SATA III plugs in with cables to your motherboard, just as your current hard-drive does. |

Correct. If your machine is relatively new, it will likely support it. Google your machine on the web to be sure... or read the documentation. You did save the documentation, didn't you?

WHAT? I WAS SUPPOSED TO SAVE THAT STUFF?
Actually I'm using my rack mount case from 2004, but in 2010 I put in a new motherboard with SATA III and USB 3.0. I doubt it supports the new mounts but there's adapters that can. My shock was, I didn't even know these new SSD's existed.
I went ahead and ordered my standby SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III. I got two of them. They've been solid, reliable and with the new style and faster SSD's, they're about half the price I originally paid. $139 each.
I'm sure I'll lose nanoseconds, by not having the faster ones, but I'll save the time by having my Christmas gifts wrapped for me instead of doing it myself.

i wouldn't worry about mounts. i have 2 PCI-e drives stuck to the inside of my cabinet with duct tape!

I want to thank you Todd, for taking this post regarding the latest technology of transferring gigabytes of information per second into units storing terabytes of that information on a cube the size of your palm... down to duct tape and WD-40.

To take it down another notch, move computer tower outdoors and blast the innards with a leaf blower - instantly remove all traces of dust bunnies (and all other foreign material for that matter)

Just as you write this I had installed my hard drives and saw that dust had collected on the fan coils that cool the Processor. So I went to my local ACE and bought a can of compressed air. '$8.50' she said, and I said, 'FOR AIR???'
So here's the deal. Get your leaf blower and fill a bunch of cans with air. Undercut the market at 5 bucks and you'll make a fortune!

I operate a neighborhood LPFM and with a couple of computers running 24/7, the leaf blower has paid for itself regarding the stupid price of compressed air. Not only that, It works as a leaf blower as well.
