Looking for suggestions on the very best interface/AD DA converter for voiceovers. I'm using an Mbox2 now but looking to upgrade. |

I'm a fan of MOTU products, but they do tend to go bad after about 8 or 9 years. They have a wide variety of units and their free software (Audio Desk) is optional and quite good.

I like something clean, not coloured in any way. I've been through a bunch, but I must say that my current Audient iD22 is just right. It also has a lot of patching capabilities... but if you don't need them, the iD14 has the same preamps and DAC/ADC.
So many to choose from... most are really good quality. The only definitive advice I would offer is to avoid Focusrite like the plague. They were flavour of the month a couple of years ago, but there are too many stories of failures and driver incompatibilities. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Thanks for the info...the Lynx Hilo looks awfully nice (and expensive)...might be a bit of overkill for VO, not sure...does anyone know if it's ipDTL/ Source Connect compatible? |

I think that most options these days are great for VO, and the options are huge. Probably comes down to the connectivity you need. For me, I use an SPL Creon which aren't available anymore...pity, but it's good for me because I use an outboard pre and with the Creon that pre can go direct to the converters and not through the Creon pre's. A new one on the scene is the Steinberg UR-RT2 USB Audio Interface with 2 Rupert Neve Transformers, this looks like a goer at US$349. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, despite the issues probably is seen in use by more VO professionals that anything else. I use to use, and still have a Lexicon Alpha at US$49 and even that unit has converters that are top notch and standup almost to the Creon. Really an outsider I think wouldn't tell the difference. Sometimes it can come down to what makes you feel good about your setup, and that's important too. |

This question as it stands cannot be answered properly. Missing information includes:
Budget
Required features
Internal or external preamps
Mac or Windows
etc... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I second the Audient rec. The Burr Brown converters are super clean. |

Jumping in on an old thread here to update - I run on Windows, and bought the Apollo Twin USB two weeks ago ... it works with Source Connect - but NOT with Session Link Pro!
The tech at SLP said "The Apollo Twin Dual seems to be one of the few incompatible devices on Windows machines. However, it works well on OS X.
So if you are on OS X, there will probably a solution. But unfortunately not on a Windows machine."
VERY disappointing, unless someone knows a way around it? _________________ www.dereksvoice.com |

Not until UA writes a driver that works with Chrome. In the meantime, get a UCA202 and send a line-out from Apollo into it just for Chrome. $30 fix. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Thanks for the tip, George- but I went one better (I hope) and bought an RME Babyface Pro; will be returning the Apollo.
It seems to be one of the favorites and SLP confirmed that it is compatible with their signal. _________________ www.dereksvoice.com |

I too run Windows.
I recall Beau Weaver liking the Lexicon Lambda as a clean converter. A converter is just that and nothing more. If you want just a converter without a lot of bells and whistles a simple piece like the Lexicon is inexpensive and functional. Around $115
I use the Focusrite Forte because I want a backup preamp if my Neve fails. I picked mine up a few years back for $350.
I also have a Lexicon Ionix U42S in a box in case the Forte gives out and a MicPort Pro. |
