Any recommendations on a desktop, spring-loaded, mic boom that can accommodate a heavier (2 pound) microphone?
I like the Blue Compass but the Sweetwater guy said the screw/part that holds the shockmount/mic upright wears out. _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

I bought 3 Luxo boom arms about 18 years ago and they're still working great. They're still noise free (virtually) and handle everything from a lightweight 416 shotgun to some fairly heavy large diaphragm mics. They have a variety of mounting hardware too.

I have a problem with spring loaded-mic arms; I can't stand it when they rattle, vibrate and hum.
Went for MIKA mic arms here. Rock solid and you could suspend a very heavy mic. Buy once and forget it.

Couldn't agree more. Spring-loaded arms always cause problems, and there's nothing better than the Mika Yellowtec arms. They are beautiful in form and function. I actually have a couple of Heil arms in the booth, and they are serviceable; but when I can justify it, or when The Lust overtakes me, it'll be Mika all the way. _________________ Jack Daniel

Ordered a Blue Compass. We'll see.
Contacted Townsend Labs and they had some recommendations like the Ride, Blue and Mika. They seemed to think the Blue and the Yellowtec are made in the same Chinese factory. _________________ www.moosevoice.com |

OC White makes some great booms. They're Luxo on steroids and somewhat of an industry standard in the broadcast biz. And from my experience with them they don't rattle, vibrate, or hum. I've been using one of their more recent models for the past decade and prior to this one I had an older one that served well for 30 years. Only reason I replaced it was to color match to the last studio remodel. Expect to spend approx a couple $$ for the boom and table riser if you go that route. It will last you the rest of your career. |

Luxo has been mentioned a couple of times in this thread. I purchased one several years ago based on a recommendation by someone here on this board.
It looks attractive as it has a couple of concealed coils that provide tension rather than the springs that "twang" in some stands.
This style might cost a bit more but it's quiet and reliable in that it stays where placed. _________________ If attacked by a mob of clowns go for the juggler.

Definitely curious about the Blue Compass, let us know what you think of it. Totally a knock-off of the Mika arm... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I actually thought it might be a rebranding, so close is the appearance. _________________ Jack Daniel
