VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

In 2009 me and the love of my life, and I so ain't lying neither, Elisa Canas decided to attend, because we could, the NYC Voice Over Mixer.

December 2019 will the 10th (estimate) anniversary of that journey. To celebrate we will be attending the largely professionally pointless event. Eat, drink and be merry with other voice over people! Yes we will! There will be joy in our hearts, smiles on our faces and more than several eye rolls when someone tries to network me or my midget friend.

Hoorah and hussar for inventing excuses for a school field trip!

Whilst I shall enjoy myself I am also aware of my standing within the "voice over community". Anyone planning to attend may suddenly remember that they have a prior engagement in Kyrgyzstan.

That is just fantastic! I wish we could sometime coax you up the coast a bit but NYC will have to do if I can make it there. I can't believe it will be 10 years. I have so many wonderful memories of that weekend - from travelling with DB, DeWitt, and Mary (and sharing Mary's family apartment for the last time before it was sold) to meeting so many fellow vo-bbers. What a long, strange trip it has been.

Really - 10 years! I too am gobsmacked by that number. Sounds like Trish is going to have to find a bigger space. Looking at my options now...

In the early days the mixers were arranged by Eric Shepherd. I also attended "NYC VO Mixer 2010 - Self-Destruct!" which to me myself personally resulted in my untimely death, loss of health, friends, house, money (several pounds) and career. Needless to say I was blameless in all this and everyone knows I am not the sort of person to live in denial.

To escape my Lawyer, Nigel Cola of Tizer, Cola, Vimto, IrnBru and Ribena, Eric moved his family to Austin, Maestro. As you know that city is in a state, one of lawlessness, so Nigel was made to eat my claim for compensation. The rest as they say is Witchcraft.

"You need to get closure, go back" said my therapist Henna Tattoo.

"Aren't you supposed to ask what I think would help?" I asked

"No Philip" she replied poking me in the ribs with a half eaten chocolate HobNob "I've met you, I know you and I'm unlikely to live long enough for the answer. GO BACK!"

"You'll pay the air fare and the hotel?"

"GET THE F*** OUT OF MY OFFICE!"

There was a hidden message in the last bit which I suspected to be, no. Working on a hunch I self funded (under protest) both the flights and hotel.

On the night in question should you spot me visually pay no heed. I will be in a corner, sipping water, sobbing, dosing myself on high strength Haliborange, avoiding both eye contact and people handing out business cards.

3am

"Sir, we're locking the doors now!"

As I walk back to my lodgings, a crack house found on AirBnB, a homeless person will hand me a dollar, shake my hand and smile. This one random act of humanity will return me to the man I once was back in the summer of 2010.

I was all ready planning to attend this year's Mixer in early December. Now I have triple the reason to be there if at all possible! I very much look forward to seeing you, Elisa and the rest of our clan who are in attendance, Philip!
