The serious side to this piece of social media satire is genuinely saddening. For about a week I have seen, uniquely on Twitter, numerous identical "Tweets/retweets" which have simply been thoughtlessly copied or RT'd saying that there are a lot of lonely people out there at this time of year. Don't despair, call this number ..."

Better than nothing? Yes. But seriously. We can't check up on our friends, family, neighbours, the homeless person on the street? Yes we can, but most won't. SHAME ON US!

Please like this on TripAdvisor as I'll get a 10% off voucher for something, no idea what, but still, awesome, eh?

Even before the Nativity Thing was a thing, there was THIS time of northern hemisphere need-to-reassure-ourselves that indeed the Great Dragon WOULD not COMPLETELY DEVOUR the Sun, that George would slay said reptile and the Last Green Trees amongst the barren landscape would truly propagate again and make a New Spring... and to that end we huddled together, went out to help those still cold, did NOT leave it to the Workhouses... and sang songs, lit fires, and responded to the worst Nature would do to remind us that we indeed WOULD rather have Others out there than not... and that we could all understand each other on The Basic Issues, All of us.. Every One.

Some months ago I met a lady who lives in the village walking her West Highland White Terrier. I told her about a documentary I had just narrated which included details of how a family had nothing to eat, no water to drink.

"A few weeks ago I had to walk to Buckie (about 4 miles) because I had no money and no food. I knocked the doors of family and friends to get something, anything. I was so hungry it hurt. Hadn't eaten for 5 days" she told me.

"You know exactly where I live" I said "So that never happens again! If the car's there and I don't answer the door wait until I get back because I'll be out with Bess, no more than 20 minutes away. Try the door, if it's open feel free to empty the fridge, it's fine. Are we clear about that?"

We were almost going to spend Tuesday night watching our SAG/AFTRA screener movies and enjoying a gourmet dinner all by ourselves, but some of the sweetest friends we know invited us to share the evening at their home. We couldn't resist. Either way, perfect.

Thanks Philip for reminding us of sharing with those in serious need.

Not quite as serious, in my radio days I remember inviting the "orphan" deejays and news people to our house on major holidays like this. Being alone when you don't want to be (and radio was an itinerant job for many) is hard, so it felt good to grow our family for the occasion.

Something I first noticed decades ago: humankind has progressed to the degree that we can put people on the Moon and create anything we could possibly want. But we haven't been able to figure out how to get along with each other. While the various species of the animal kingdom largely live on in relative harmony, the alleged "intelligent" species seems intent on creating ways to divide, conquer and kill each other.

We certainly have the ability; I remain optimistic and sincerely hope we can do better, because:

Life on this planet is pretty much predicated on killin'-and-dyin'. Nature's "harmony" involves a spectacular amount of violence.

Still! if we embrace our sentience, we have the ability to decide how the wars of life affect us.
And so I still say Life is grand.

(that Carl Sagan quote is terribly gloomy! It's more of a call to arms than a ray of sunshine)

Sorry if I offended anyone. The Carl Sagan quote was intended to be a wake-up call. Because we (humans) are the only ones who have any hope of making things better (a la the annual wishing that the new year will be better than the previous one, peace on Earth and good will toward men and all that), it is up to us.
