I'm hoping somsone can share their wisdom with me here...

Outside of radio and TV spots, I usually charge by the page or word. I have to quote a project for a new prospective client I met through random networking.

His company does interactive touch screen presentations for retail displays. The sample script he sent me is reminiscent of IVR prompts:
"Touch a feature to learn more!"
"Rounded edges-- safe for little fingers!"
"Now, choose your color!"

This could be a nice ongoing client for me-- he and I really hit it off and I'd like to work with him. I'll be seeing him early tomorrow morning. What would be a smart rate proposal for this kind of work? Keeping in mind, of course, that I am totally awesome and oozing mega talent BUT don't want to scare the guy...

Amy,

By the page or by the word seems like a sensible way to approach this sort of thing. For my own clients, with projects like this, I usually charge a flat rate of something in the neighborhood of what a Category II industrial narrate rate would be. (I haven't look up those rates in a while, so I don't know the exact number, but it's on the AFTRA and SAG sites, I'm sure.)

These are my considerations for POP or Point-of-purchase audio:

How big a market?
National? Regional? Single-store?
Duration of media usage?

Get a signed agreement.
This kinda stuff would price out in a similar fashion to radio imaging liners.

a per-page rate
20 lines per page
half-page minimum, if you like

You can make your own choices based on the market size and usage duration. for instance:
$25 per page with a $15 minimum for a single-store. (this is lowball, I know, but it shows how low you can go without compromising your integrity)
$300 per page with a $125 minimum for a regional placement.

More, if the budget will bear and the anticipated usage is an entire year.
However, most of these POP things have a limited shelf-life, as it were.

Thanks guys! I've been wrestling with the idea of usage...I get the impression he'll want buy out. I got an email from him over night saying that what he is considering me for is using me for the kiosk software's tutorial voice, then offering me as part of a customization package...

Thank could be a sweet, on-going kind of thing. I hope it works well for you.

Yep... this stuff is pure buyout.
Whatever you do, DON'T be afraid to ask questions or to ask for a contract.
Best of luck with this!

I've done a handful of narrations that ended up in Home Depot video displays and the like and was happy with a basic narration rate. I've walked by a jillion of those in the stores over the years and almost never see anyone paying any attention to them, so I'm not worried about over exposure, that's for sure.

Bruce,

That's my thought on this subject as well. And if, as seems to be the case with Amy, there's a shot at having regular update work...that's sweet indeed. Work you don't have to work to find.

The meeting went very, very well. I quoted my usual per page rate, which is in about the high-middle as these things go. He sent me a script and some direction and the gig is mine, Mine MINE! Woo hoo! (I booked two today-- I'm small potatoes, so I'm usually excited if I book one!)

Talk about over-exposure - I'm the voice of the Lowe's Call buttons (Customer Assistance needed in the glass cutting area) and some days you go in and I'm all you hear the entire time you are there. But yesterday I was in to buy some screen doors and I didn't hear myself once! Must have been a real good employee to customer ratio that day!

"Customer Assistance needed in the key cutting area, near the back door..."

Well, soon you may stick your photo CD into a kiosk at the drugstore, only to have me order your around for the next few minutes!
