I'm not one for small talk, and I've read in various forums that sending emails that state "Keeping in touch," "Just touching base," etc. are grossly overdone and understandably run the risk of being ignored.
Realizing what is considered acceptable changes over time, can anyone offer any suggested ways to creatively state that I'm just trying to stay "top of mind" without being obvious? Or, suggest where might I find pointers on this?
Thanks. _________________ Mike

Any message with an obvious "top of mind" intention could be seen as disingenuous. Some like them... personally, I think most don't. There are some "newsletters" that hit once or twice a year... and if they have "real" content, I have no issues with them at all. Those that hit every couple of weeks... well, that's what the "unsubscribe" link is for. If I find a need to communicate with my client base, a simple "out of the studio" message works well. It has a definite business purpose, and also serves to remind people you exist. It's not been a thing for the past year or so (because I've not strayed far from the studio at all)... but the occasional "I'm taking a short break away and will be out from xxx to yyy." serves the purpose. This has actually generated work for me. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Of course you can create stunning message subjects to grab attention:
Time to change your gender fluid?
Oh Vaccine, why can’t you be true?
The voice behind the mask revealed!
That’s my mic AND I’m happy to see you.
How to jailbreak using a wav file.

Promote an event. This is the best way to stay in touch. "Just wanted to stay in touch" is so dime a dozen cliche. And I need read newsletters. Always too long and peppered with stuff I never care about.
But this is also where social media comes in handy. You should be connected with all whom you would send a just wanted to stay in touch note. Promote (don't brag about, but promote) your next event and your network will, by virtue of seeing your promotion, be in touch. |

i find myself in the position of - TWICE this week - agreeing with peter.
if i want to remind someone "hey, i'm out here, man!" - or business is just slow --- i tell people i'm going to be out of the studio for a short period.
60% of the time, it works every time. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I've been out of the studio for the past 16½ months. Perhaps I should send out reminders. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Thanks, guys. I think Peter and Todd's method would be best for me, as I do not use social media to interact with clients. _________________ Mike

Is it time for a little "vacation" for you, Mike? I like Peter and Todd's marketing strategy ...
"Whoops, you can't have me for a short period of time. Sorry."
"Wait ... what??? But ... we NEED you, because we just remembered you and there's this thing you'd be perfect for."
"Oh, okay, I can squeeze you in -- but just because it's YOU. And you're my special favorite."
This is gold. _________________ * * * * * * * * * *

I think you're on to something, there, Karyn. "Murphy's Law of Contractors:" telling clients we're going to be taking some time off is an almost sure-fire way to generate at least some work.

I once had a conversation with a radio station Programme director who told me that his instructions to on-air talent were simple. Before broadcasting something they should make the statement in their head and then ask the question "SO WHAT?"
For us, especially for us, the reply to the question is "Errr, nothing! Sorry about that!"
On Twitter EVERY recommendation for a book I have seen was posted by an audiobook narrator, the narrator of the book being recommended. That is, until today.
Louise is a friend and a best selling novelist. Today she was singing the praises of a MUST READ novel.
"I've just finished reading this, what a lovely, immersive book, an epic love story & an adventure. Highly recommended." Under the Golden Sun by Jenny Ashcroft."
To maintain and promote our businesses we need to think and behave differently. For the most part, in our business, marketing, sales and promotion = doing exactly the same as everyone else whilst expecting an entirely different outcome. |
