What a delightful man!

As a child of the 1960s and 70s I love the way he neatly skipped over how he came to fame in the UK.

Some years ago I was going to Broadway shows with some regularity. We got tickets for A Threepenny Opera at Studio 54 (reclaimed as a theatre in 1994 - although there was still a faint patina of "white dust" in many places). I obviously knew what it was, but hadn't paid much attention to the production itself. As we settled into our favourite seats (front row, mezzanine), I looked at Playbill... Jim Dale as Mr. Peachum! It was a wonderful surprise and a true delight. Although ably supported by Alan Cumming as McHeath, and Cyndi Lauper and Jenny... it was Jim Dale who made the show so memorable.

I've got a few years on Philip, so his presence in the UK media (especially in the blooming "pop" scene) was just something we all grew up with... and his appearances in many of the Carry On films cemented his position in popular UK entertainment.

The only blot on an otherwise storied career is that he wrote "Dick-a-Dum-Dum" which became a hit for Des O'Conner. (Brits are now shuddering slightly - I'm sorry for reminding you of that).
