Top question for all #voiceover people - Do I really need a Neumann U87 mic? Top question for all VAs. Do your parents make you do your chores around the house even if you have an urgent audition?

Next I'll be reading something like " Che-Taylor Madison regrets to announce that she is no longer avail' for Voice Coaching or as a casting director as the 8th Grade study schedule is turning out to be beeotch!"

With the above on record, voiceover is STILL my life. I "Heart shape" my job!

Hey #voiceover, Less than 1% of the world’s paid recordings are made on a U87 mic. How do you like those odds? Feelin’ lucky, punk?

Question, Philip... if you did not have a couple of U87 mics laying around, what would be your weapon of choice?

That gold Manley was one of DLF’s go to movie trailer mics. All higher quality mics are supposed to sound approximately the same but some folks think the Manley is “golden” in performance as well.

It is a joy to behold but, in my case, added "tube warmth" is about as much use as a cup holder.

From my early days as an apprentice Voiceoverist I noticed that when I walked into the booth at any studio be it in London, Manchester, Bristol or Hull the Sound Engineer would move his fingers to near the top of the mic channel and roll off some bass.

"More bass and tube warmth?" suggests the creative.

"Why?" asks the Sound engineer "Are you trying to attract a Pod of Orca swimming 50 miles off the Kent coast?"

Philip, thank you for your frequent sharing of stuff you share so frequently well. The selection of mics you might use in the absence of your U87 is commendably commendable.

The Manley Gold, undoubtedly awesome sounding on you, would be wasted on me. Your voice would be identifiable speaking into one of two tin cans stretched between a piece of wire (within hearing distance, anyway).

I have the believable belief that I Win Gold as title holder of the title "Bottom of the Bottom Feeders". And Manley Gold aside, as a non pro, income from awarded work over the time I've been a member of this site might have paid for my 416 that I enjoy speaking into when I have reason to speak into it.

'Nuff said, thank you for being you.

I never understood the lure of the Manley. I've tried it a couple of times, and it just sounds muddy to my ears. I'm sure George the Tech had Don's mic set up with some EQ (is this true, GW?), but both the Manley and its attendant Vox Box seem overrated to me.

I'd love to know if anyone here is actually using a Manley VoxBox. I've never put hands on one myself but a couple of people who I had - and returned - one indicated that the noise it generated was intolerable without doing some kind of weird wiring fix. Given that that's only a couple people and the thing is widely used, I wonder if they were the exception to the rule rather than the rule itself...

I recorded at Audio Engine in Phoenix years ago using a U87 into a Manley Vox Box. To this day it’s the best my voice has ever sounded in these ears. Did I record a potentially award winning narration that would change all our lives forever? No. I played a German accented psychiatrist helping a patient realize which roofing company was the best.

Did this world class mic/pre combo make a difference? Eh, probably not.

Because of our imprisonment actors who used to take an hour off from doing something for a television or a West End musical/play and go into a studio in Soho for a VO session had to set up a "Home Studio". M'colleagues in the UK scream and shout how awful these studios sound with their poor acoustics, terrible mics etc. Apart from none of us ever needing etc on our recordings one point has been missed by all on the Methinks they doth protest too much Facetube Group. These Actors were hired and paid because the Creatives et al wanted their experience and above all their performance.

"But I have a Gold sputtered diaphragm!" protests Dave, leading group member

"Dave, that's disgusting! I'm gonna ban you from the group!"
