Oh it's even more funny, Bill. They prefer I cut the audio in their booth. My goodness, what a set up! The mic is good. It's a Sennheiser 421. That's where it goes down hill from there. The mic is plugged into a 40 year old McMartin radio board, then preamped with , get this, a Radio Shack PA amp! From there, it goes into a 10 year old Mac. The file is then transferred to a Zip disk as an aif. From there, they load it into their Avid for production.
I had some time to kill and showed them how to clean up the NOISE. But still the signal/noise ratio was so bad, that all the "gentle" cleaning I could do only distorted the final wave.
I finally convinced them in the future to email me their scripts, and I'd do them in my studio. I've got an old Zip drive sitting in a box at home. It would be no problem to drop the disk off for them. I did direct the creative services director to a web site where he could get a Symetrix 528. I explained for about $800 they could by-pass all that crap.
In TeeVee it's all about the pictures. |

My first time hearing myself, small town Canada, in a Woolworth's stereo department. I wanted to say to the 'blue-haired' woman in the 'stereophonics & records' department, "Hey..that's me!" but realized it kinda sucked and felt a bit embarrassed. Probably for good reason! (My read that is..not the department....although...)
With regard to the '40 seconds of shit stuffed into a 30 second bag' tangent, if I were a copywriter, I'd pounce on that and write a spot that simply has (Upbeat Read / Create Excitment / Fast Paced): "BUY, BUY, CONSUME, CONSUME, BUY NOW, 1128 BROADWAY, THAT'S 1128 BROADWAY - CALL 684 2336 684 2336 AND "CHECK OUT" OUR WEBSITE!!! HTTP - WWW - PHIL'S HOUSE O' SAUSAGE DOT COM - ALL UPPER CASE! BUY NOW! 1128 BROADWAY, CALL 684-2336......yadda yadda.
I tried to make that funny by being ridiculous, but gee heck, haven't we all actually read stuff like that? Maybe I should get into copy. Get the client to voice it themself. Oh joy.
Hey MCM, double-congrat's on not being a 'v/o virgin' - just watch you don't become a 'v/o slut' like...umm..Andy was it? |

Finally heard one of my own ads on the air today-- or at least, the tail end of one. It was a weird feeling. Really weird. But a feeling I like! |

It was/is always a trip to hear myself. Unfortunately, it happens so infrequently I have actually not noticed it was me until the spot was about finished.
A couple times in the last few weeks my wife has actually asked me when my stuff will be on the air (as if I would know). Hey, maybe I'm just imagining I do this for a living  _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Because most of the commercials I've done have been for TV, my friends usually see them before I do. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. They saw me in a Casino commercial about playing "tic tac toe" with a chicken. I'm glad it was "very" local. I got tired of being called the "Chicken Guy". _________________ "Bailey"

Thanks to one international TV broadcaster, over 120,000,000 on a daily basis are heard to say "Oh f*** not HIM again!!"
I have to hear the end product once in a while, it keeps me going as I usually conclude that I would prefer not to be remembered for that pile of rubbish. |

I'm often thrilled when friends tell me they've heard one of my spots on the air, because many times they have told me long after the original 13-week cycle has elapsed, and then I get to sic my talent agent on the ad agency for another fee. I can't listen to everything and these "ears" of mine have made me thousands of dollars in potenitally missed income.
It also makes me wonder how many re-use fees I've missed because no one heard. Oh well.
Having been at this for 30 plus years now (I started very young) the only time I get really excited to hear myself is when it's a particularly fun spot or character I've played. I imagine/hope people are laughing and enjoying it which gives me a thrill.
A few years back we did a three year long series of spots spoofing the "Car Talk" radio show, promoting the local Isuzu dealers. I remember enjoying hearing these unique ads in a sea of bland radio. If you'd like to listen to a sampler, your welcome to visit:

When I hear myself on the air, I find myself making the same facial expression I made while making it: BIG smile, frown of stern rebuke, etc.
Heh heh heh. I'm sure we all do that, right?
Am I right, you guys?

When I heard the first spot I recorded on the radio,I think the smile stayed on for about a week. Not too many things have topped it!!

No, bug guy, you're not alone. I think that, and the pursuit of free food, is the modus operundi of all production people. |

Since I'm still new in the biz, whenever I cut an in-house spot at the station, I check the logs to see when its playing...then call the wife and tell her when to listen.
The above statement SCREAMS ROOKIE!!!!!! |
