So, this genius says to me today:
"Why should I pay you $250 to talk for thirty seconds? That doesn't even make sense! You talk for free all day!"

I love that line of logic...
It's kind of like the local auto dealerships who use their kids, or themselves as the talent in a radio commercial. Yeah it's cheap, but how well is it working for you?
Sadly, most are too cheap to take the chance on finding out.
My answer to this question usually gets the point home...
Why...?
Because your competitors are.
While not always the most logical argument, the "bigger than him" mentality is one that should be exploited when and where possible, _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Amy, hanging out at the Hollywood Bowl-O-Rama pinball parlor isn't advancing your career. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Good point. Tonight I'm going to stand out on Ventura Blvd.
Wearing nothing but watercress.

Remember... with problem clients, the lowest common denominator often works.
My favorite was one customer who decided that despite agreeing to std. rates, that he would only pay 10% of the fee. His next complaint was that he couldn't get access to the FTP site to get the wav version of the clip.
Hmmnn... I wonder why?
Next bit was to threaten "legal action". Works for me, as I have a signed agreement for services, which has not been rendered. Tossed a copy of it to his representative and received a check two days later.
I found out later that the client had been blacklisted in the local area for doing this kind of stuff on a regular basis, stiffing casting agencies on payment, non-payment to talent, etc.
<sarcasm>
Real gent, this one was.

I'm picturing this exchange:
"Because: just because nearly everyone can ride a bicycle doesn't mean that everyone can compete in the Tour de France."
"Tour de What?"
"...okay, let me put it another way: Just because you can wave a baton doesn't mean you can conduct the London Philharmonic."
"Still not following you."
"O-Kaay. Looks like analogies are not your bag. The answer is...Because that's my fee."
"Oh." _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

On the other hand - you get the client who says that they normally pay X for these kinds of projects - but - oh, what the heck - let's just double that. That happened this morning. ISDN session. Phone rang "What'cha doin'? Have a minute?" _________________ Playing for a living...

Deirdre,
Yes, indeed. And no watercress was harmed during this message. _________________ Be well,
