Now I can finally afford to run those TV spots I've been wanting to do!

FVO :30

In the fine tradition of Cyrano de Bergerac, I'll tell you what to say.
And since nobody can understand a damn word that leaves your lips, especially when you've been drinking, I'll say it, too!

Call Amy's Voice Talking Service, today! Amy will say your message out loud, and pronounce most of the words correctly at no additional charge! And Amy accepts sacks of cash for your convenience!

Amy's Voice Talking Service, for all your Voice Talking needs!

I had hoped that these kind of templates would have died a horrible death after seeing them in NYC and Philly...

and promptly seeing them mocked and eventually pulled.

Would you happen to have any convenient locations? Or maybe we could get a street address or phone number? Friendly, knowledgeable staff even? No?

Oh well... Frown

And yet, the innovation marches on.

oh, so is that what they're calling it.

It's almost like the "businesses to watch" blitz that hit Philadelphia about three years back. A friend of mine who owns a local business asked me about it, since it seemed cheaper than what he would normally pay for a radio spot. I gave my opinion (decisively negative) and gave him some questions that he ought to ask should he go that route (how do they cast the talent, is it a pregenerated template, what was the setup for their recording studio, etc.).

Against my advice, he went and set things up with them, but was at least smart enough to ask the questions I gave him. When he heard the answers, and saw the studio (a Shure 57 into a PC with Audacity, one of the marketing guys did the voiceover), the lights finally went on in his head. He relayed the info to me, so I brought him into my home studio and let him watch as I did a commercial. He asked some questions (unlike the "businesses to watch" guys, I could actually answer them), I let him take a spin in front of one of my lesser mics, and compared it to a Shure 57 I had in the cabinet. Finally I put him in touch with some good casting people who were able to do what he wanted for just a little more than what he would have spent through the "businesses to watch" folks.

I now have another regular client Smile

But more importantly, the incident showed me how these places work. They use a lot of FUD to get smaller businesses to sign under a contract that usually costs about as much as it would if they went through a regular casting agency. When they run into someone who knows the gear, they use a lot of smoke to try and get past the fact that it's usually a small operation with the cheapest gear you can find, and no trained/professional talent doing the VO. Invariably... it shows in the final product.

As a fella said:

There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it over.
