I've got a Mackie 1220 mixer. I like the pre-amp and having a mixer available. However... I'm not liking the firewire interface so much. There are some nagging issues I can't resolve.
Here's the question from a tech-idiot. Can I just bypass the the firewire card on the mixer and connect straight to my M Audio 2496 sound card already on my pc? |

Tom,
Yes. Assuming you have the appropriate cables, to connect the analog output from your mixer to the "line-in" on your card. _________________ Be well,

Thanks Bob.
Will I need another set of cables to get the audio back out of the comp to the mixer?
BTW, I'm downloading the manual so don't give me grief. |

Tom,
Yes, but you'll need to be very careful not to create a feedback loop when you get ready to record. Make sure the connection TO the mixer from the computer is down before you start recording.
Some alternative routing schemes may become clear once you're looked over the manuals for both the mixer and your card. _________________ Be well,

I've got a wireless network card installed in my PC and it causes interference in recording when I've got it enabled. And it very well may have nothing to do with the firewire interface.
I can manage (as long as I remember to turn it off)... it's just irritating. I can't listen to audio on the net without pops and clicks.
Also, every once in a while it locks up completely for a few seconds and gives me a high-pitched tone before returning to normal.
Since I've already got a good sound card installed I thought I'd try the "old-school" method to see if it works any better. |

Wow... that's a little weird (more than a little actually).
I have the same mixer, and have had no issues with the sound.
Is your 1220 stock, or have you had the EQ modification done to it? I've seen how the work is done, and don't think it would have anything to do with your particular issue, but who knows? _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Tom,
When you say you disable the card, are you just disabling the wireless network using the card software, or are you actually having to go into Device Manager and disable the whole card? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

hmmnn... definitely odd.
now that said, I have found that some wireless cards do cause interference with some lower end mic cables (and since the usual issues that would cause interference to a semi-well insulated cable aren't present I was left confused... but the spectrum analyzer didn't lie), but I've never had it happen to that mixer with wireless gear. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
