Is it recorded or live? Will it be broadcast on TV or radio?

I have used my standard narration rate for recorded non-broadcast award shows. If it's live, double it. If it's broadcast, your name must be Randy Thomas or Joe Cipriano.

I don't know what I should have charged, but I'll tell you what I did. I figured out how much time I actually needed to be at the event-- in my case it was 4.5 hours. Only about 30 minutes of that would I be in the off-stage booth.

I figured out how long it would take me to get there (1 hour each way.) and I took the type of event into consideration (fundrasier/award gala.)

I figured out how much I thought I needed per hour, and did some easy multiplication, et voila!

I say the same as Dan-o: Standard industrial rate for recorded, double for live.

Heaven help you if it's a live event.

...may God be with you and protect you in those dark places through which you must travel.

as best I can remember it's an "Egyptian blessing" (uttered by a character from B5, so you never really know).

seems to apply well to any VA in a live situation.

Indeed.

Be sure to bring a book. And snacks. And plenty of bottled water. You might be all alone in a cocktail dress for hours on end. (I was so glad I thought to ask how long they actually wanted me present at the location, or I would have WAY undercharged! I had to be there for the sound check, the final rehearsal, then the show itself. And there were HUGE time gaps in between the action.)

Well, as a guy, I will more than the double the rates if I have to wear a cocktail dress!!!! Not even sure if they could afford me then!!And it would be heartbreaking if I'm in a cocktail dress and alone.

Oh, I don't know. Sometimes a man just needs an excuse to dress up.

If you're going to be alone, perhaps you could also charge them for an escort?

If it's all pre-recorded then I guess the usual non-broadcast industrial rate would apply.

Last couple of live VOG shows I've done I try and charge well over $100 per hour versus a hefty minimum. Last gig was an hour of rehearsal, 2 hours of sitting on my duff and eating dinner with them (of course you don't want to eat much ahead of one of these), and then one hour of intros off stage, and I charged $600.

A year ago I did a live VOG gig for a TV production with Willard Scott, the Inkspots, Cab Calloway's grandkid's band, and some other group, and that show was fed by satellite to 60 theaters around the country. They were trying to explain the Medicare prescription plan to seniors. That paid about double for the same kind of schedule, as it was semi-broadcast. Just so you have some numbers.

Bruce

*For the few noobs who may not know the term VOG, it stands for Voice of God. While we'd like to think it refers to the quality of our read, it actually refers to your being a dis-embodied voice off stage or off camera.
