I just perused the AFTRA website to find the official audiobook rate(s), and all I can find is a lot of sidestepping with suggestions to call your local for info.

Does anyone have the correct AFTRA rate? I assume it entails finished minutes/sides?

Thanks, Jim

Thanks Amy. Where did you find these rates? In my search today I found the same rates, but they were at a site called http://www.whatupdoc.com/ and I didn't feel assured that they were current. It would be helpful if AFTRA would publish the rates at www.aftra.org.

All the best, Jim

So the AFTRA scale for audiobooks is buried in the old music recording contract? Amazing.

Well, think about it.
It's a recording, usually done in a studio, to be distributed via the current recorded media. so "sound recordings" is accurate. You'd think, though, that there could be a separate category listed for audio books.

Contracts can be arcane, to be sure. In my experience, the folks at AFTRA locals don't mind asnwering questions from people who aren't members.

Do you really think people pay that much (20 grand for 10 hours)?? I was once in negotiation with a company that was gonna make me come to thenm (in another state) to record, and the whole book only paid $1500. It was a norml novel.

I thought bottom dollar for reading an audio book was closer to $5000.

Remember - these are AFTRA rates we're talking about - non-union audio book publishers will pay what they feel the market will bear.

And I'm pretty sure the AFTRA rates are very different than they used to be. It used to be that you were paid for the finished hour - not the time you spent. That will bring the fees down!

For what it is worth, although an AFTRA member, I charge what the market will bear (i.e.: how much I can con my client out of..) - usually scale + 150%. I have been a LOT higher.

All right, this is not normal for everyone, but I get what I ask for (usually), and you can too. The key is in the asking. You don't get, if you don't ask.

AFTRA 'Scale' is a minimum fee, not the "suggested" rate or the 'going' fee, for work performed. The 'minimum' means, in very simple terms - "..it is suggested that you do not accept a rate or fee, lower that what is written...".

Make your choices, and understand what the work you are willing to perform entails. Understanding the job will help you set your rates and fees acordingly.

Tomorrow I audition for a children's book. The rates are:

$125-$150 per session (3-4 hour session)

Residuals: $0.20 per character per book sold

She told me the last book sold 6000 copies so that's $1200 per character read.

How does that stack up?

This is probably going to sound wrong, but please take it in context.

Just because one book sells "X" number, does not mean another one will. That said, good going, getting residuals is a good thing, IF you have a way to track actual sales.

What I think or someone else thinks about your income is really of no consequence to you. If it is acceptable to you, then that is what matters.

IF I remember correctly, when I took an audio book seminar from Pat Fraley many moons ago, the pay arrangement for many book deals (probably from major publishers) is a basic fee from the publisher to the producer to pay for talent, directing and recording, and then the producer and the talent each get a royalty of 10% on sales for some extended period of time.

Maybe Pat can correct or update this info.
