Can you guys give me the scoop on this site...is it worthwhile? Does anybody use the webpage you get with joining? Do you actually get jobs from there?
Thanks!

I booked between $15 and $20K through them in 2006. When folks ask me if these online services are worth it, my response is absolutely YES...they send audition leads to my inbox, what else could someone ask for? I know my agent doesn't get me as many auditions as the services. Now, some are a joke in their "budget" offerings and I rarely bid the price they are offering...most often it is higher than their budget.
Some thoughts:
-It would be wonderful if we could get all of our work through agents and get scale & above every time, however with the landscape change in voiceover it is not likely to return to those kinds of days, thus consideration of an online service is advisable in every way. I average 5-8 auditions per day and between two casting services, repeat work and my agent, I support a wife and two kids.
For anyone to say that the online services are not worth it & you can't get work from them, I would have to ask...(I say this gently and in no way mean disrespect nor do I think I've got it going on because I do not...by a long shot) have you been in the business long or is voiceover the part of the entertainment business that you are best suited for?
What we ask for in this business is an opportunity to audition...thus, the online services certainly do provide plenty of chances for this. I would say (humbly and with respect) if you are not getting work after a few months...you honestly need to take a hard look to find out what the problem is. We would all do this in any business, right? If I run a company and I bid on jobs, but don't book any of them...after a while I need to find out if it is my price, my reputation, my quality of work, phone manners...whatever.
Online services have their downside, BIGTIME. Virtually every job is below a reasonable rate (thus I bid a higher rate).
So...YES, join Voices.com and Voice123...these two services have paid for themselves many, many times over and the repeat business from jobs I booked through them is ever so valuable to me! _________________ Brian Haymond

I've been on their free trial for the past month and have submitted almost 100 auditions, most of them custom. Maybe I just suck at this, but I haven't gotten any nibbles from it.

Although a FREE member of V123,(I still have not recieved any work through them), Voice123 is sposnoring VOICE 2007 in Las Vegas as a Premiere Sponsor. They will be onsite at the event to discuss the company and what it can do for you as a voiceover talent. It should be insightful.
I have taken the opportunity to join Commercial Voices. www.commercialvoices.com Rick Gordon has helped in promoting VOICE 2007 as a Major Sponsor.
He has also been honest with me in saying "Comemrcial Voices is a platform with which you can market your talents, "CV" is not designed to find cleints for you, but rather give clients a chance to hear you and your skills".
www.voices.com is also a Major Sponsor of VOICE 2007 in Las Vegas, Nevada. David Ciccareli is working hard to make their online talent site a success...
Just some thoughts.
Toodles

Last March I paid my $200. In nine months I booked about $10k through the service - including repeat business. There are a LOT of leads that I don't respond to. And, like Brian - I often bid higher than the budget. Will I pay $200 to make $10,000 - shoot yeah. Is there a LOT of VERY low quality "talent" up there? Uh-huh. Again, agreeing with Brian - I see the leads - most I delete - some feed my Gear-lexia-buy-osa. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

A couple of years ago, I got one gig thru V123 that paid for my membership and then some.
It did not come thru any "lead" it was a direct hire.
It wasn't enough bang for my buck or time, so I didn't re-up.
I'd guess it's a combination of suck and luck. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Before I wisened up and decided to learn before I earn, I signed up for a year and got zip. It's a matter of how you intend to use it. The only time I could get to the leads was at night after 400 others submitted their demos. You have to have the time to stay on top of it and you have to have the goods to be chosen for most of the jobs posted there.
At least, that's what I gathered. It's a tool like any other. You use the tools that work best for you. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Well, including repeat business, I make about $60k from V123 each year, so I'm definitely a poster-child! It's all in HOW, WHEN and FOR WHOM you audition.
WHEN
First of all, you cannot just answer leads at night, since there are legions of people staring at their email screens all day waiting to pounce on every lead that comes in. I do not do this, but if I get one while I'm working, I glance at it and try to be in the first 20 or so to answer. I have, however, gotten some gigs where i know I was like number 70 to audition.
FOR WHOM
I do not answer all leads. I NEVER answer: "We're a small startup company run out of my garage and we need a voicemail. Lowest bid wins." I go for projects that look like they're going to lead to other things... "we've got a 2 minute video and down the road we'll be redoing our PBX system and have 8 other vids"
HOW
If they provide a script, DO A CUSTOM DEMO. I have also been a voice seeker on V123 and I cannot tell you how annoying it was to fish through the people who submitted a generic commercial demo to my request for a custom sample of the script I needed, since it was character acting and not sales. I just deleted them without listening if it was a commercial demo. Also, I do not agree with submitting way above the person's budget. If the budget is too low, don't submit. If they state a budget, that's what the job pays. There will be 200 people who will do it for chicken scratch so we're not going to teach anyone anything by saying, "well, I'll do your $50 gig for $600"
That said, have at it..it's all about diligence!!! |
